ive always held with lots of tourque and tall gears and it's never failed me, if you have the guts then go with the high ones, if you don't then get some and do.
4.10's in a Dana 70 under the Diamond T, with a 6.0/4L60E. Doesn't really count 'cause it's not finished yet, but it's as steep a gear as I've ever put under a car, er, truck.
Got 2.97's in the '56 F-100 with a TH400. It rules on the interstate. Got 4.56's in the '53 Customline with a 4-spd Toploader, I'll probably run out of gear on the big end.
Have you thought about converting your 4 speed to a T56 6 speed, some come with a .50, 6th gear, which would get you going down the road at 70 MPH pulling 2100 RPM. They can handle a fair amount of torque, 400 Lbs stock. Lot's more if they are built right. I run 4:56 gears in my 36 with the a 6 speed. Check out this calculator. http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/gear_calculator.html
3.23's and 3000 stall with a 30" tire, is just about the best all around combination. imo. Much quicker on the street than 4.**'s.
No...Toploaders are cool, thats why it has one The car isn't done, so after a few test p***es, I'll see whether I need to tone down the gears or not. It won't be a street car so I'm not worried about driveability. The F-100 is the daily driver.
6.17 in a 60 pontiac rear under a 55 chebby D/G 12.5 301 with a isky 550 super legerra and kit 2 AFBs on a Offy mid riser and a Mini-Mag. Only used 2nd and 3rd on a saginaw short shaft 3 spd. Lightened till we had to put a tube on the rear for lead shot to make the scale. Wound it to Holy ****. Never got closer than a second off. It was all fun till somebody put an eye out. Today, 3.70 is about as deep as I go.
stupid in the other direction, 2.66 in my c-10. with a t-5 in front. stoopid me, hit the u pull n pay for a rear for my 5-lug conversion, i look for the best looking, easiest to pull, which was slim pickins that day. i didn't pay any mind to gears, figuring just about every chevy truck is going to have 3.43 or 3.70 gears. get it home when i pull the cover to inspect it and see a pinion gear the size of a dinner plate. doh! it actually does ok. the splits are big, but the motor has decent torque. 5th gear is now pretty much reserved for freeway blasts. for ****s n grins i just plugged my numbers into a top speed calculator, stupid indeed. dammit, now i gotta go find out for real.
I have a Versailles rear in my 36 dodge with a 2.50 gear and T350... Wouldn't trade this combo at all. Found 2 complete set up's just in case
I did stupid the other way, too, my old Suburban beater - which I used to tow a bunch of old cars home - was built with a 350, 700R4 and a 2.73 locker. It got great milage at 75 mph. So keeping with the tradition I managed to find a one-ton van with a 3.23 in it... computer shifts it to OD about 45 mph and bleh, I have to keep it in D until I'm doing 55 if I want to make it to 65 in less time than it takes to brew a pot of coffee. On the bright side, it gets 11 MPG towing 4500 lbs.
Runnin 3.89's with an AOD. & carbed 91 302 in my 54 Merc. 22mpg & she'll bring the front end up & squat nice on the street.
57 Ford, 292, 3sp, 4:11. Would just scream at 55 in the right lane. Toned it down this year w/a T5. 1800 @ 65
4.56 in a O/T Dodge 440 with 727 trans..p***es everything in the first 1/4 mile..except a gas station (although right now its just sitting)
