it is a bit "heavy" on scene...

I flipped through it at the bookstore but I was too embarassed to buy it. I'd rather be seen buying Hustler than scenester trash.

I did consider hanging around the newsstand to see who bought it, but in Mt. Pleasant I suspect no one did.

"Custom Rodder, American Rodder, and Street Rodder didn't pass the Bill Gates test..."

Hmmm...Don't recall old Bill giving us a test to pass. Must of skipped Skool that day.

One can only assume you meant to say, "Must HAVE skipped Skool that day."

Mr. Gates won't catch that one either, but you expect more from an editor... [IMG]

I believe it was Dan Rather that coined the phrase, "The dumbing of America"

Aw shit...look at me, I've turned into a grammarian! Where's the gun?

Close...Jason got his from Kroger...mine came from the Book Nook! [IMG]

I think the concept behind the mag is pretty cool...and that they'll strike an even balance between the scenester stuff, greaser lingo and cars in due time.

98% of the rides that they photographed and featured in the first issue were WAY cooler than the giant model cars in the new issue of Street Rodder, to cite an example...and that's what I REALLY look for in a mag..."Do I like what they are featuring?". In a word, yes!

The language and spelling seem comical, but they'll get past that phase and settle into their groove the way The HORSE did. I hope to see them stick around awhile and offer us a look into the world of greaser rods each month...I can relate to the cars in those pages far more than I can to the plastic trophies in some of the mainstream media!

Too early to criticize...but they DO need photography lessons! [IMG]

How can you have a car feature without a single full profile shot of the car. Big half page shots of a girl standing in front of it, with no significant amount of the car in view, then just small detail shots. What kind of car magazine is that?? And what's up with that thing about "we're not here to tell you how to pomp your hair" and then there's an article on a barber shop... they need to make up their minds about what they think they're doing and learn how to take pictures. And change the retarded name. I think it's just going to end up being the hotrod version of that gay Horse mag.

For me...ALL car magazines are compared to Rodders Journal (the Pat and Steve era)....great photography and great journalism. OL Skool has neither.

  11. Geez, you guys sure do know how to WHINE! [IMG] Not to mention changing the subject!!! [IMG]

As far as the spelling of the title, it gets attention, which causes people to look at the magazine and decide whether or not to buy it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

That is exactly the point...you're going to scare off a lot of readers with the goofy title. You've only got one issue out...now might be a good time to reconsider the name of the mag. I like the Horse. I looked at the "OSR" (can't get myself to type it out)...it was a bit heavy on the scenester stuff, but looks like it has some potential...but that name is killin' me. [IMG]

Oh boy, page four already, looks like I'm late......

Magazines are like project cars...they are never done, and no matter what you do, somebody always could have done it better faster or cheaper.

That said, I have never called a girl a kitten, nor have I ever called a guy a cat, unless it was an insult like vagina head...

I haven't picked up an issue to look over, but I have checked out the website and the weird message board.

I'd like to point out that the other mags with misspellings in the title, Car Kulture, Custom Rodder etc. only have ONE word messed up. OSR has all their wordz wrong. If you guys keep up the hep-cat daddio bit, you COULD just add Peeyurh to the begiinning:

Peeyurh Ol' Skool Rodz...or POSR for short.

That's a joke right there son.
Any mag with cars is a good one, most folks don't read anyways.....

  19. Got me a copy of CKD issue #9 and it didn't take long to read it cover to cover. Don't wanna be too picky here, but if we're gunna be hangin shit on OSR for their goofy way of talking (like how lame is saying 'goofy' when ya really mean 'dumbarsed') then maybe we should be giving the editors of CKD a verbal hiding for all the gramatical errors in their latest offering. Of course, then we'd just sound like a bunch of bloody restorers, coz that's the sort of lame arsed shit they do to editors of car mag's.

Very true on CKD9. What happened? CKD 8 had some problems. 9 is full of issues. They couldn't have re-read any thing. I sent them an email but no response. It's the one mag I look forward to the most... [IMG] I don't like bashing mags too much cause I know what it takes to put one together, but this last issue of CKD is unacceptable.

    CKD....
All I know is that everytime I see Scary Larry on that cover, I feel the need to READ THE STORY that mentions him...but it is not to be.....
I called two different guys from OSR to ask about artist submissions....told one of them my life story....never heard one iota back....re-read issue #1....now it doesn't matter.....I'm saving my money for SHOP RAG and SKIN TWO...

I saw it, they just need to get a better camera, there are some way pixelated shots in the rag

I agree with your comment on the photos. Reminded me of the cheap lowrider mags. How many of these mags are there going to be? Theres already about 3 good mags, and lots of awesome zines.

i was excited to see it cause i really like the horse....can't believe they have anything to do with each other....the carb rebuild article i enjoyed though [IMG]

  24. Magazines cloud YOUR "Idea potential"-[with theirs]........also they eat up CAR MONEY like crazy! [IMG]just go out there right now and count the dollars up youve spent on em already......sickening aint it? [IMG]

  25. I thought it was KEWL... [IMG]

I picked up a copy at a truckstop... They were all out of porn and vaseline [IMG] ... actually, I heard about the mag, and made a special trip to pick-up a copy. Worth the effort, though.
Like most, I agree that pix of CARZ would be better than Jesse James lookin' KEWL and the close-up of VooDoo Larry's big ol', albeit nicely groomed, nostrils... Hahahahahahah... Just kiddin' man... Love That Ride. Seein' it at the Pile-up last year was a trip, and I think they should have mentioned the Krybaby doll... [IMG]
Like Denise said, I like the fact that there's some mid-west RODZ it it.
I, also, agree that every feature car should be FEATURED at least once, with a decent shot of the whole car.
I don't mind the Greaserkittybobberkewlscensteriffic aspect, so much. It might be what sets it apart, and the SCENE is what it's all about... otherwise, we'd all be street rodders with nothing to do but shine our billet.
The tech article on the 94's was AWESOME!!! Shit like that will keep me buying it...along with the centerfold art... that'll save me alot of money on coloring books [IMG] ... and the little trivia things, like the "nailhead" info on the first page of the silver bucket feature, are kinda neat.
Overall, I think it's a great mag, and I'll subscribe with the belief that it'll get the little quirks worked out. Either way, it's 10 times KEWLER than Street Rodder... (which I don't even subscribe to, but they keep sending, anyway)...

Yeah.....Larry promised me a beatin' if I didn't pin that cover up over my drawing table!
Not knockin' Spike AT ALL....realize it was a layout change....Larry made a guest bedroom at his new digs called the "Johnny Ace Suite"....it's next to the outhouse....
