Nailhead starter question..........

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by CTFuzz, Aug 24, 2010.

  1. I asked this question on BuickV8.com and had people tell me I have a non-Buick starter.......
Here's what I have, 1965 401 Nailhead motor with an early 364 flywheel and starter........The starter will bolt on BUT, only one mounting hole matches the block (see picture). This starter has the long "nose" I need to work with the flywheel I am using. I have two early 364 motors and both have this type starter on them. The guys on BuickV8.com tell me they have NEVER seen a Nailhead starter with the solenoid on the bottom. I have two of 'em...............
My question is , what starter do I need??

All the early Nailhead starter solinoids were on the bottom. All my 322's were. I haven't seen any with the solinoid on the top. I made one using a 6 cyl 49 Pontiac tail and a little creative grinding and redrilled the block where it mounted. Been that way for more than 20 years.

    WOW!!! What a helpful post...

It is a 57-63 style starter. Same as on my '59 401".
If this can't be made to work well, contact Tom Telesco. Tom makes mini starters for the Nailheads. I am sure he would be able to either get you a mini starter to work or get you on the right track as far as what you need to do to make yours work. He is usually on the V8Buick site. Surprised he didn't have any advice. He goes by TelRiv on that site as well as on this site from time to time.
If you can't get in touch with him, pm me for his ph #.

the starter you are using if from early nailheads like stated. you will need to find a 401 nailhead starter that had the dyna flow trans should bolt right up and be long enough to hit you flywheel. in know 63 buicks have the starter you need.

  6. Thanks for the help guys............I now have a direction!
