Caravanning with another Muntz Jet from the Bay area of California across country (Hwy 50 to I-70) to Indianapolis for a little get-together next month. We will be driving through Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. 4500 miles roundtrip... Anything I should know about, be cautious of, or any information I might need? I'd appreciate any input from anyone that has something to say. Any sights not to be missed? We don't have any "weather" here in San Diego, we have "climate", so any help with what to expect weather-wise would be extremely helpful. Thanks...and happy motoring!
Have a safe trip Ed...and make us Old Farts' proud. You might think about heading a bit north and check out the Speedway Museum in Lincoln. Tell Speed Bill Venza sent you!
Good luck, take lots of pics and bring home the "best of show" trophy!! Why dont you have the bay area guy come to you? It would be a closer start and then you can head up rt 66?
ed from what i've seen on the news is hot, wet, more hot and some floods and some more heat! oh yeah and hi humidity. does your ride have AC?
Bring it jacket, it can get cool in September. Fall is my favorite hot rod season here in the midwest! So is this get-together a Muntz show that is open to the public? Indy isn't that far and you know how much I love 'em!
Here you go Megan. Muntz Mania 2010 will be held in Greenwood Indiana (a couple miles south of Indianapolis) on September 17-19 at the Holiday Inn. This is supposed to be the same weekend as the Hoosier Swap Meet in Indianapolis, as well. Hope this helps.... Anybody else have any ideas on what to see or do?
While not necessarily car related, I think the Arch in St. Louis along with the museum under it are a must see. And when you are done, Lecleds Landing (the original part of St. Louis still left) has a bunch of great restaurants. When in Indy, take the track tour and see the Speedway Museum. Other things to see in IN are the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, Indiana and the Studebaker Museum in South Bend. And if you end up that far north, stop in Coldwater, MI (other side of the border) and watch a movie at the Capri Drive-In. Have a safe trip.
Have a great trip. Me and my Pop just did Route 66 from L.A. back to my home town Dearborn, MI. In and around St. Louis we ran into construction and dealt with it all the way through Ill. Ill. was pretty bad. The highway's and and the old road. If you take the old Lincoln Hwy U.S. 30 Make sure you go through Chicago Heights early in the morning. Some good old buildings but, A very bad neighborhood. Its safer early in the morning. I'm driving back to L.A. in my 63 Riv Wed. Good luck on your trip.
Isn't there a restored one like thin in Utah? I think that is were the Green one I saw at the Greenwich Concorse was from. Have a great trip, Pikes Peak has a great view if you have time for the climb.
You didn't say, but do you have a defroster?? Sept. in this climate will cause interior glass fogging. I had fogging on the 'interior' side of a windscreen on a 'T' Bucket in this weather!! Have a safe trip, take lots of pics! Cosmo
Cosmo go to your local parts store and get Rain-x anti fog for the inside of your windshield ,,,works great also carry micro fiber towel
If you are just passing through St. Louis on I-70, you can make a pretty clean bypass by taking I-70 to I-370 to I-270, just about any time of day. If you want to see downtown, the Arch, etc. try to hit it between 10 am and 3 pm during the week to have the best chance avoiding sitting in traffic. Weather is a crap shoot. It tends to be pretty nice in mid Sept, 70s to low 80s, but it could easily be be 50 or 95. Any other Western MO questions, shoot me a PM and I'll tell you what I know.
Or just put regular RainX on the inside of your window, it has the same effect! If you don't have to see the arch I highly suggest this route. Denise and I did this a couple weeks ago on the way home from Salina for the first time and it saved a lot of time and traffic! Do you plan to take route 70? That's how I went to California from Ohio last year on my big trip to the LA Roadster show. See post here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=377711&highlight=chevygirlrox+flathead You're going to have such a great time!
Colorado is pretty clear sailing usually. Try not to need gas around Vail and Aspen it's pricey.I-70 over the mountains is notorious for overheating cars so jut take it a little easy on the hills and bring some coolant if your car might run a little on the warm side. When going through Denver between 11:00 and 3:00 might keep you out of traffic. If you need anything here please call 303-325-5968 and enjoy the trip. I don't know when your coming through but this weekend is hot Mon-Wed cooler with possible rain. Food gas lodging is cheaper in Denver than surrounding areas. It will also be the only real big city until KC. Allen Amrine
As you come through Utah on 50 to hook up with 70, I live one block off the main street in Salina. Depending on when you come through, you can visit the RODGE MAHAL. Wayno
I highly recommend checking out some of the old Lincoln highway, check here for info http://lincolnhighway.jameslin.name/ some pretty cool old bridges, building towns etc.
Leaving at the end of this week....anybody else with any cautions or advice or ? Thanks for the input so far to those who posted...
Have a safe trip Ed! Take some sunscreen- the top- the camera & take lots of pictures to share. Man that sounds like fun!
Thanks...I did put the top back on. Too many folks that are familiar with the midwest convinced me of that item. We take our weather for granted here, but I guess it can come up quickly in other regions...
Take a bunch of pictures along the way. I enjoy the vicarious cross country trips. I hope you share your adventure.
I guess this means I wasn't dreaming yesterday when a Muntz Jet passed me on I-70. Did you see me I was in a Big Truck going west?
Hahahaha....too funny! Just got back. 4845 miles roundtrip. Our Muntz Jet caravan made it up and over 11,158 feet elevation through the Continental Divide, and over to Indy without too many incidents. Sad to say that I saw only three hotrods in 8 states and almost 5,000 miles. I always thought HAMB guys were being truthful when they say that they drive their cars....I guess I was wrong.
This picture showed up in my mailbox today, so I thought I would share. Eastbound on I-70 through eastern Utah a few Sundays ago, in the mid-afternoon..... That tiny spec on the road is my Muntz Jet....
