i need to build a workbench. anyone got any pics of what theyve made. wood? steel? height?? length?? anything will be helpful thanks. later
Here's a simple one to get the ball rolling: http://www.hammerzone.com/archives/workshop/bench/below20xl.html .
A kitchen counter is 36 in. high so if that height is OK with you you may look for old kitchen cabinets, make a top from 2X6.
I like to use Formica counter tops. You can buy blems at Home Depot for less than 50% usually, or find them used in your newspaper under building supplies from people remodeling. I like waist high for comfort. Mutt
THE single MOST important thing about building a workbench is to have it at the right height.measure from the floor to your elbow.that is where the top of your bench vise should be.measure the height of your vise and subtract from your floor-elbow measurement, that is how high your bench will be-george
I used 2x4s to make a ladder frame, stood it on 4x4 legs four foot on center at the front and nailed to the 2x6 stud wall framing at the back, put two layers of 2x6 tongue and groove over it and covered that with 3/16" steel diamond plate. hellfer stout.
I saw a wonderful steel bench, on castors with an english wheel built into one end - think it was over on metalshapers.org - but for the life of me I can't find the link again... But that's the one I WISH I'd built!
my favorite workbenches, I have two, I made out of a 8' lengths of bowling alley. They are 40" deep and 35" in height. The legs are made out of 4" x 6" and framed with 2" x 8". There is a shelf underneath approximately 10" off the ground that is made from 3/4" plywood. The laminated rock maple and oak make them quite sturdy and very heavy.
one of my benches is 4 x 8 made from 1/2 inch steal plate for a top 3x3 angle iron on casters only problem with it is that it is always covered with too many tools and lose nuts and bolts from what ever im working on.
