So I'm sitting at my home on Saturday drinking and I get this dumb idea of driving back home on Sunday, thing is home is about 5 hours away and I have to be back on the same day to get to work on Monday. Well as dumb as it was I made the trip. The first trip I have ever taken the Imp on, and I had to get through the g****vine. The trip kicked ***. Nothing like the sound of a straight six at wide open for five hours. To my suprise she pulled the g****vine like a champ and didn't break down. It may sound like a small thing, but when you have a history of having to push your car through intersections, it's a pretty big deal. I don't see how guys trailor there cars and don't get out and thrash on them. Road trips are much more fun when you don't know if you are going to make it. Okay now for a question, and it may sound like a stupid one. My paint is shot and I'm looking at getting it at least primed this weekend. The question is what kind of paint do you use to get that flat black look? I would ***ume just flat black or black primer, but I've never sprayed a car and wouldn't know. Thanks, Mike
Use the search feature- this gets brought up and rehashed every two or three months. Search under "primer" "blitz black" "DP90" and "bumper paint"- you'll come up with a bunch of stuff.
before you go primering it black take into consideration what color you will be painting it later, dont primer it black if you are painting it a light color later on.
The color that is on it right now is two tone turquoise and white, which matches the interior, which is in need of repair. Trust me, I would love to put a nice paint job on her, but I don't have the money. I was looking at going with black to give it some personality and some edge. The master plan is to go with a dark blue metallic, so would black be the way to go or just plain grey?
how bad is the paint? do you have pictures of it? i think a lot of folks would agree that priming it, just to be priming it, isn't the greatest idea...not that i don't like semi-gloss finishes, i've had a couple, but they were flat colors, and were done because i'd done a lot of body work, and the paint wasn't salvagable.
I can understand this guy's frustration. Patina is one thing. But if you do some bodywork, and don't want a spotted appaloosa (sp?) motif, a coat of primer makes you feel better on a budget. Try straight DP90 primer, by PPG. It worked for me in the past. It does fade, and shows bird **** stains, however. And if you paint your wheels red, expect an *** whuppin'. Jake
Thats awesome, the g****vine almost killed my Impala once going from Bakersfield to San Berdo. If its hot that section of road can put a hurtin' on your cooling system.
maybe look into tinting grey primer a light blue, or laying basecoat with a dull clear to give it some color? a car like a 60 screams color...
it would be super simple to tint your primer to match the tourquise paint(its probably faded anyways, right?) would look ALOT better than black primer on a 60 impala.. ..SISTER BETSIE from church when i was a kid had a killer 60 4 door impala tourquise and white,,
The real Watson Chevy was killed a long time ago. It was last seen stripped out under some road debris in a dump in California. It had been sold to a high school kid who couldn't afford to get some repair done after a minor wreck. After some things got stolen off of it at the body shop storage lot when it was recognized, he couldn't afford to fix it, so it was taken to the dump.
I agree,if cost is a big issue just get some cheap basecoat the color of your car such as Nason,Omni or Limco over reduce it and mist that baby. I primed many a car black but like **** said THAT car just wants those colors back on it! Oh yeah,I like RED wheels damit!
I say find the cheapest paint you can in something close to your stock color. hopefully in a satin or such. key thing is that it is cheap paint. (walmart or store brand junk). tape and bomb the car in parking lot of said store...watching for prevailing winds so you don't piss off customers. drive home and hit it with some 400# and drive. will give the flat look...simple to touch up and the cheap paint holds up like **** so that after it sits in teh sun for a year or two it will oxidize bad and sand off like it wasn't there. I rattled my car walmart flat black last september (03) and by may 04 it turned grey. by the end of the summer I went to sand out the bad paint (400# wet) and most if it came off showing my spotty primer and all in lots of spots. so I rebombed it in a parking lot on the way to the pileup. it shot a light green krylon on it but some black bleed through. (why I say try for stockish) worst case is you are out $20 and an afternoon
Bomb it in light blue primer, unless you're going for that midnight dark blue thing-colored primer is where it's at!
I use flat black and satin black mix it 50/50 rustoleom its durable, doesnt stain and stays dark. I would suggest sea foam green for our 60 with some waston style scallops and stripe them in a darkgreen. You could do all that with krylon or rustoleom on the cheap.....RP

Yeah, I knew about that... just fergot! Anyways, I was thinking that one of the Watson-approved clones was a restoration of the original, but now my memory is coming back. I do believe you're right. And I'd still be almost as upset if someone killed one of the clones! (Sorry for the hijack~~~)
Damn. A few angry replies about my choice of paint. One guy asked about the condition of the paint. It's shot. The paint that's on it is some earl shieb job my great uncle put on it in the mid 80s. The original white paint is showing through in some areas and i've already had to take care of some rust spots with some sanding and primer, so it looks like **** right now. I would like to go with color but money is an issue, I got plenty of other things on her that need to be fixed, oh, and it's my daily driver. Thanks for the suggestions.
if you are looking for a flat black, id use john deere blitz black its durable and ive never heard of it fading, and its a nice bold color with DP90 ive heard that it fades and scuffs really easily, I remember one person said that their dog was wagging its tail and it left a bunch of scuffs/scratches on the body and JD blitz black is like 20 bucks a gallon
rattle can it until you can spend the money on quality based and paint. When I was stationed in Oceanside, I bombed my car in the parking lot of my barracks before going out into the field for two weeks came back wet sanded it, and off I went hitting the beach. I remember taking the g****vine in my daily when I was stationed down there and I would go visit my parent in Santa Barbara. Coming home I would eat hondas and other ricers up that hill, my Chrysler wouldnt even break a sweat. Jonney
engine enamal is pretty good to goes on smooth and doesnt fade, but it is kinda costly compared to other rattle cans of el cheapo paint. Jonney
