I have a 1962 Mercury Monterey that the transmission won't shift. First off about a few months ago, the stock carb float stuck and the engine caught on fire. I since replaced the stock intake with an Edelbrock rpm performer and installed a Edelbrock carb. I also replaced hoses, wires, and spark plug wires. After getting this all done, I drove the car for the first time today. The transmission will not shift. I can manually shift it, but it won't shift automatically. Would there be something that the fire caused that I need to replace, like a vaccuum line or something? I checked the fluid and it was ok. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Phil
Definitely look for a vacuum hose. There should be a vacuum modulator on the back of the trans that does the shifting. You could trace it from there, usually a rubber hose to the modulator on the trans to a steel line that runs up to the intake. Another rubber hose to connect it to the intake.
