HOw do you wire in an existing turn signal switch to flash the rear brake lights?

I just installed original tail lights on my 49 M1, they had long been missing and somebody replaced them with cheap after market lights.

At some point a signal light switch was added to the column and an extra set of lights were mounted under the tail gate specifically for the signals as well as a neat-o set of front bumper mounted directional lights.

What I would like to do is replace the original wiring harness with oem harness, attach to the oem tail lights, and make the brake lights flash in the oem housing thus removing the additional signal light (single filament housings from under the tailgate.

    Is this possible?

Oem housing center, bottom is single filament signal light with the after market tail lights top left.

Signal light switch (7 wire?) is already wired into front signal lights (after market) and aftermarket rear single filament lights. Reads autolamp Chicago 90C0.

New OEM style wiring harness will replace the original wiring harness(wire is checked and cracked). Crossover wire is not shown.

I want to replace the aftermarket lights attached to the fenders as well as the under tail gate lights used for signal only. This is all I need.

Neat-o front signal lights of unknown origin. I think these are keepers :D

Any help with making the oem brake lights flash is greatly appreciated!

You need a separate wire for each brake light (left and right), and a turn signal switch that will work with separate brake lights (the 7 wire switch you have probably will). Next you need to find the wiring diagram for the switch, or figure it out yourself.

I don't get wanting to keep those funky add on front lights, but getting rid of the funky add on rear lights...hmmm....seems that if you're going to all that trouble out back, you'd also want to put dual filament sockets in the park light housings and make the front look original too. I guess if you looked around and found some matching funky old arrow lights for the back, you'd change your mind? :)

I thought of converting the front marker lights to dual filament, this may still happen.

What I am wondering is what is the proper wiring to cause the brake lights to flash. How do I interrupt the brake lights?

Do you interrupt the ground connection with a flasher? Know what I mean?
To make them blink on and off? That way if the brake lights are on it'll flash, and same for tailights, too. I hope this helps.

If there's a dual filiment bulb in the back , the signal-stat should sort it all out .

This is right on advice. Separate wires to each light, one wire for the tails. Your harness has the tails on one wire and the brakes on one wire. Not gonna make it work that way. Add another wire and separate the brake lights and you're in business.

I see the age of this post and am sure it has been addressed already. I just wanted to add my .02

I would like to see how it turned out though. Update?
