Hey guys, how do I get the sending unit out of the tank of a '63 Impala? I have the new one here with the new o ring and retainer. I'm trying to figure it out without having to drop the tank. I fit perfectly in there and there's enough room, I just can't get it out! :D

the retainer is a really tight fit. You'll need to smack it quite a few times to get it loose/off Then the old sender just comes right out. If you have the retainer off, then the o-ring is just holding the sender into the tank. Showcars automotive makes a sending unit wrench for doing this job

What do you suggest I smack it with? Flathead and a rubber mallet, or just a rubber mallet?

just use some care with either a punch or flat headed screw driver with a hammer and it will twist right out.

Success! Thanks a million Hipkat and Yellow Wagon!!! After a bit of finagling and some motivational words I got the old one out, new one in, and a working gauge. Now I just have to get the odometer to work and I'll be done with gauges... :D
