Langy, No,the Louvers are not open. There is a plate welded under them and they are sealed off. Tom ( Tired Old man)
Long ago I used to have a Harley dirt track racer that didn't have a filter on it, so I punched a lot of holes in a Planters Peanut can, screwed it to the carb intake, and stuffed it with some knitted pot holders to screen out whatever dirt it could. I didn't take any pics, so use your imagination. I got a lot of comments on it every time I took the bike out.
Complete, *****in products has them http://www.*****inproductsinc.com/ and if you want just the top they have them too.
Here's mine. The elements caught my eye in the lawn mower parts aisle at a home store (Briggs & Stratton application) and wanted to try doing something with them. Probably never anything like it in the 40's, 50's or 60's but homemade hot rod parts will always be traditional.
Just had to cover the cheap chrome lid. Just zapped it out of a piece of s**** roof section I had laying around. Yep, I shortened the threaded rod before winging it down.
This is the air clearner on my 29 A. It is a 1 gal Capitol oil can with a SS insert for strength and two elements stacked. It gets lots of camera time at shows.
