becoming the fastest growing hotrod board on the net.I love this place and it's no wonder that it has grown now to epic proportions and is getting bigger everyday.I don't know how many members there are but the regulars you see pop up with a thread or answer a thread all the time and there are quite a few of them.Ryan has done a fantastic job not only of the old board but this new one .I'm wondering of the idea of a small yearly subscription idea say $10 just to help keep things going?(what do you think) as Ryan has to rely on donations from auctions and his own pocket at the moment and i'm thinking say 5,000 x $10 may help out some. Now i probably will get barracked for this sugestion and i don't really know what Ryan does for a living sommit computers i think but this board must take out a lot of his time so a subscription perhaps could help him go part time and the board when needs be.Perhaps a voluntary sub at the beginning of each year for those who want to help?Anyways the board is moving on and the bigger it gets the longer Ryan will have to spend on it so i will just leave this open,it's Ryans Board but it may grow to a point he is doing it full time............Marq
Marq, that's a mighty generous thought. I can't speak for Ryan but I know one thing: he has never, ever ASKED for any money, contributions, auctions or whatever help to keep the HAMB running. Judging from his character, I KNOW he never will. He is a proud motherfucker. That's why somebody somewhere (I dont know how it started but it was a stroke of genius?), launched the first ever HAMB auction and made history... For years now, HAMBers have stepped up to the plate and helped as best they could with whatever they could auction to help keep the HAMB afloat. I think it may be one of the most endearing aspect of the HAMB experience? It just wouldnt be the same if it where a 'Pay-per-view' board...
I know I would pay a subscription if need be. But I couldn't pay Ryan enough with all that I have learned here. Maybe we could try to have some smaller ticket items in the auctions? Stuff for 10-20 bones, or hell, if you feel like it I guess one could just paypal Ryan 10 bucks. One thing, I think Ryan should seriously consider getting the HAMB a non-profit standing, maybe would help when it's time to cough up $$ to Uncle Sam. If anything, it would help pay for stamps.
I agree with Wizz.I think the board would loose the feeling of all being in the same boat rowing in the same direction if people"paid" for it. Some would feel that something was "owed" to them if they paid. Plus there's a great sense of satisfaction in running or participating in an auction and seeing the money put to such good use. I admit that sometimes I feel guilty when I read about all of the work Ryan and Co. are doing free of charge and I'm just getting on here for fun, though. Glenn
We've tried that before. Ryan has said he will NEVER make this a "pay-per-view" board. Forget about it.
On the other hand, I THINK he may have expressed interest in an All-Male, Nude HAMBer calendar? Wich at the time struck me as odd?
what about a donation thru paypal button or something like that? somebody has to do is convince him to put it on though
Marq, Ryan has never turned down an auction to benefit the Jalopy Journal/HAMB...I've done several...I doubt that a subscription to this place will ever fly around here...if you want to donate to the HAMB's well being (even the rest of you reading this thread), do an auction...surely you've got stuff you don't need and someone else does? That's the best way of "adding to your reputation." R-
there's never anything to keep anyone from sending a check to: Ryan Cochran 226 East 73rd Street Kansas City, MO 64114 or pay-palling him money at ryan@jalopyjournal.com if ya feel strongly just send him a few pix of dead presidents. i just hope that ryan doesn't ban me for giving his addy's out (although i got them from right here on the hamb).
I think I just threw up in my mouth a little... I think this has been gone over once before, and it's like Whizzerick said. I wouldn't want the HAMB to be run by committee of ""customers" who's only qualification is the ability to get $10 to Ryan.
Some boards have a "Donation" button... maybe with this King God upgraded board he can add one of those...
I would certainly be happy with either an organized donation system or a suggested subscription of some sort. I buy car magazines that I hardly glance at, and even the best I can find are not worth nearly as much as the HAMB. I think a few bucks would do a lot more good here than down at Primedia headquarters.
I think the auction system is cool. Its free market and community building at its best. The site gets money and hot rod related stuff gets shared. Some of the stuff goes for a lot of bucks and it prices people out of the deal but the point is to support the hamb not allow you to get a good deal. I would gladly pay a subscription of $10 but just the concept cheapens the site. I feel a lot better about having bought a $60 auction and sold a $40 auction. Not only was it more money to the site I read every day but I got some cool stuff and was able to share some cool stuff at the same time.
Will we be getting membership cards with our $10 paid memberships? What about free parking? Man I hope we can validate........
My business partner, John Gruber, who runs the weblog Daring Fireball started a "pledge" system, and it has been a great success: long-time users wanted to support the site, and a little money allowed John to dedicate more time to writing content. Those who pledged membership (like PBS, etc) get advanced site privileges. I, for one, think that separating the auctions out in a separate forum, would be helpful to feature them. Since they seem to be a permanent part of the site now, they should be separate and featured (and get them away from content).
I'm not exactly saying pay -per -view .Perhaps a donation button thats anonymous would help or something like that.I have been a member a short while and want to give back to the board for all the help i have received.I hope eventualy i will have the experience to help others.I will be up to my 1000th post soon and there abouts will put some nice bits up for auction and hope this will help Ryan and the Board but i don't think the current auction system however well meaning it is will keep up with the current rate of growth of the board.Unfortunately that is the way things are i'm sure Ryan had no idea of the monster he created but to keep up with that growth cold hard cash may will be needed and although you have lost the comraderie of a few guys chattin shit round a computer to a gold mine of information held by many given to many its still a good thing,it's almost like having a communal brain................Marq
a few guys chattin shit round a computer to a gold mine of information held by many given to many its still a good thing,it's almost like having a communal brain................Marq[/QUOTE] Hmmm........You guys have (again) given this newbie plenty of food for thought. I'm one of the people who just recently (Dec.04) jumped in and helped overpopulate this place. I'm so lowbuck, I prolly wouldn't have done it if there were a cover charge (but validating parking WOULD be a selling point). The fact that the HAMB is selfpolicing and selfsupported is a BIG part of its grassroots charm and credibility, to me... But now I'm more inspired than ever to auction something off. There must be SOMETHING I could live without......................................................
As mentioned before, if you want to help out, do an auction find something you like and auction it off (small or big). The more it means to you the more you feel like you are giving.. So go auction off that rare intake, carb or if you love your parts to much, how about your girlfriend.... its will all go to support this place.. Or maybe something you jut have laying around
Someone could list all the pieces and parts needed to build a car (let the bitchin' begin as to WHAT KIND of car... who cares!)... Everyone donate a part... If you don't have parts, throw in a few bucks for shit like tie rod ends and wiring... A coupe of guys, who don't have rides that need work, and some time to spare, can throw it together... Someone, out of all these members should have time, and it could be passed off between members as time permits. Sell it on Ebay... after we FLOG the shit out of it at the HAMB drags... Done. Once a year... $10K (+/-)... Think that's enough? I've suggested this before, too, and don't see why it wouldn't fly... JOE
I think the auctions are a good way to put summat back,But what if we win summat on this side of the pond, the postage could be a real deal breaker. Think it's best just to use the Pay Pal and send what you can when you can. It worked fine for me when I bought the Hamb calander. John
What's a summat? You guys over there need to speak English... If you mean "smut"... I'll start the bidding at 50 bucks. JOE
I know he has said that there will never be a subscription or dues, although I think it would definately work and people would be willing his board, his choice I think JYD's idea is great
Summat=something, they think just because they invented the language, they know how to speak it....... x Brandy * I have ALL SORTS of car parts I need to relieve myself of, just afraid that shipping would be the bummer*
I was hoping for one of these... A major award. The soft glow of electric sex. Now THAT sure would be summat. Wouldn't it? AND... It's a Fragile' so shipping from Italy wouldn't be so bad for you guys across the pond.... JOE
little orphan annie was the only thing that could pry me from the soft glow of electric sex YOU USED UP ALLLLL THE GLUE, ON PURPOSE!!!!
