ok, wondering if anyone can give me an estimated ballpark horsepower and torque of a 61 283 .030 over forged flat tops, duntov 097, ported 416 casting 305 heads, performer intake, 500 cfm 4bbl. thanks in advance for any insight on this

Lots of info missing here but I'll put my guess in. I think a 283 2bl was 195 hp. A decent 327 4 bl was 300 hp. I figure those heads will help a lot. I'll guess you have a decent distributor & headers. I can't imagine the parts would push it from 195 hp to over 300 hp. I wouldn't bet any money but I'll say 275 hp. If I'm the closest how much $ do I win ? I don't know what it is going in, nice engine for a 61 Impala. It wouldn't be top pick for my Camaro. Gene

  3. About 670 with 9,000 pounds feet.

They make software that will estimate HP and torque on a given combination its usually free ware and can be found all over the net. It doesn't know a specific piece of information that we don't know either and that is how its tunned. It can only give you an estimated potential.

Not to slam anyone just being honest. Tunning is everything. You can teach a monkey to screw one together but tunning is an entirely different story.

I would guess set up properly, your ports done correctly you should get yourself into the 300 hp range. Remember port work is a **** shoot, you can do as much damage as good.

Since the factory version with 2-4bbl and that cam was 240hp, I'd guess 'maybe' 240 to 250hp with PERFECT tune and headers.

The past is so reasonable and boring...if you look at current rodding magazines, you will see proof that any SBC with a chrome aircleaner and headers makes 600 HP :)

The factroy version with a sold cam (097?),11-1 ish compression and 2 four barrels was rated at 270 HP for a few years.Being that was a gross HP rating it may have been actually less, maybe.
The engine described by the OP if, it's good good cylinder sealing ,should make 250 net HP.Might make more if tuned perfectly.

you should be looking at about 270. I ran this exact setup in my coupe. Might not be alot of power but it'll scream .

Pull the valves and polish the bowls. Lots of casting flack in there. A port match is a must too.

its going in a 29 5 window coupe, 3 speed saginaw with 3.50 1st gear, 3.42 rear gears. puts overall 1st gear ratio at 11.97. it wont have much on the big end, but she should be a screamer gettin there

mine had a saggy 3 speed behind it too with 3.73 gears. I love my saggy, but the only problem is you cant shift em fast.

  11. Too many variables, too many details left out to make an accurate estimate. Just build it and put it on the dyno if you want numbers. If it's in a little 30's car, it will scream, if it's in something heavier it will move. Crank HP might be around 300, torque in the same range, but rear wheel power is what you feel, and what really matters, so estimate it in the mid to high 200's to be realistic, until you get a dyno print out. A friend had a T Coupe that put down 187hp at the wheels and ran 13's @ over 100mph in the 1/4, so big hp/tq numbers don't always mean alot when it hits the asphalt

i am porting the heads right now, almost finished, the exhaust bowls and short radius needed tons of work, intake ports were way off, exhaust bowls are complete, cant believe how much material needed to be removed, but they are very nice now, intake bowl needs some work, but not near as much as exhaust side. they should make nice power,

I'm confused. Your name here is "Aceracer"...your most recent entry describes working the ports and your description indicates that you know what you're doing. I would never try to port heads myself (polished a few, just to see what it's like), so my question is - if you're good enough to be porting heads, why on earth do you need to ask us about how to estimate horsepower? Anyone that's been around engines (especially sbc) can do what various members above have done. Take a known factory HP rating, and adjust it according to the information you have given. Sure you just didn't want to 'talk' about your stuff?

because i work on imports for the last 20 years, i have not done anything with a sbc since i was 19, and blending bowls and port matching and slight radius work is not too hard with all the info on thirdgen.org and a few other sources. i was just asking because i think a few guys on here may have built a 283 and they may have some ballpark numbers for me. thanks for your concern though. and as far as talking, isnt this a forum??? designed to talk and ask questions, or am i mistaken
