1958 chevrolet impala 2 door hardtop

I have a 58 chevy impala 2 door hardtop, my question is what is the chrome strip that runs along the inside of the door gl*** do? It also runs down he chrome strip on the back of the gl***, only 58 chevy impala hardtop has them, the convertible does not have have them, let me know if anyone out there knows, or you can e-mail me at ltremayne@sbcglobal.net, thanks, Lloyd

Im ***uming its there to look pretty...... sounds like some sort of garnish moulding.
