Donn Lowe photos in The Rodder's Journal article... we are still waiting. Last I heard was that they are working on it. But I have no idea, if this is a fact or just a rumor... hope its a fact! And hopefully there are a few more photos of this incredible custom in this stash of photos.
Summers/Vogle ...This photo is at AHRF/ Can't figure out who Jimmy Stevens is, It's grouped in some other mid forties photos???
Just found this article while looking for something else... Noticed it was not on here.. and might give some additional information. The article mentions that Jimmy Summers built the car in 1941...
Well it seems that this thread has been just laying around for a couple months. Since I'm the guy with the pictures and I should be posting more for you all to check out I extend an apology. I am going to p*** these photos and negatives on to someone, and without too much going on about how I am 49 and unemployed, blah, blah, blah.........I am going to sell them. I have been too busy chasing dollars to go through all of the negatives I have, or even extract some of the older ones from the cans safely. I have about 94 images that I can verify, but once they go in to the dark room we may find some that just are not useable. Sooooooooooooo since I really hate Ebay, and these pics need to be kept in the HAMB family, I will post them in the Cl***ifieds here in the next couple of weeks or so, just as soon as I can get a clear idea of the value. I will be in touch with Ryan ASAP and may even make this something to make some bucks for the HAMB. Sorry for the outright capitalism of this post, but thought you guys that have been following this would like to know. The album that is posted so far is here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/a...?albumid=11373
Good for you keeping them within the HAMB family. Don't sweat having to sell them. Everyone has to part with things during their life that they'd like not to, but you gotta do what you gotta do. They are yours to keep, sell, or throw in the ocean. Good luck to you with the sale of the negatives. Someone will pay you exactly the amount that equals how much they want them... You have been more than generous sharing with us those images that you have posted. Good luck...
I have not looked at this post for a while. I will check with my Dad and see it the owner of the Merc is making any progress. I have personally been at this location were the pictures were taken and rubbed my slimy swedish hands all over it.(I would love to own this car). Donn Lowe is a friend of mine and he would be the perfect guy to restore the Jimmy Summers Merc. It is indeed in Tacoma, Wa. I speaketh the truth. The owner of the car is a top notch body and paint guy and could restore the car but his health is bad. Hope it gets restored to it's original itineration. Time will tell. This car will not be lost. Just another great story for a later date.
UPDATE: Soooooooooo after a long time between posts I finally made the decision to purchase an Epson V500 Photo/Negative scanner and ran one strip of negs through to test over the weekend. In an effort to preserve the film and share the pictures, while protecting my investment in this stuff I wanted to post one of my favorites from the six photos as a thumbnail. There are several shots of this roadster and the happy owner/driver? I also found a shot of what I think may be in the Summers shop with someone filling the seam on the hood from a 40's or 50's car. I have a couple of slides of a purple convert with what looks like a 40's Desoto or Chev grill in it that I want to get scanned so we can look at it. Having a boatload of fun with this little project, still have not decided what to do with the collection, but I love sharing the history. I still want to get some of the Sunbeam shop pictures posted too.
Hot Rod history right there! Amazing find....I can't wait to see more! Thanks so much for posting these.
Very Exciting NEWS.... Looking forward to see some of those. Especially the Shop photo and that Purple Convertible.
Where else but the HAMB could you be privileged to see this stuff first hand. thanks for sharing...........hope we get to see them all. Frank
Thanks so much for posting these for us all, but I have ask if you have the last Roadster pic reversed? Should it be left hand drive?
One more-I think this one is from 47 at El Mirage but some of you guys can probably date and locate it a little better. My scan on this strip was done backwards, both in the previous photo and here, but I'm just learning this negative scanner stuff.
Thanks so much for posting these for us all, but I have ask if you have the last Roadster pic reversed? Should it be left hand drive? I do everything backwards, was hoping you wouldn't notice that. Learning...................
I just found this thread, and it's amazing already! I'll add my voice to the chorus and say thanks for doing right by these photos and negatives. This history needs to be heard! On a personal note, love to see some more early custom stuff, if you have it. Thanks!
Again fantastic photos, thank you for posting them. Once you have scanned all the images have you thought about sending a cd to the AHRF? That way the collection can remain complete and you still have the originals to do as you please. I flipped the images for you
Wow! You scored!!! I recognised that Tiger photo immediately and went scrambling through my book collection. That exact same photo appears in Mike Taylors book 'Tiger', which was first published in 1979. The caption beneath the photo reads "Doane Spencer testing out the position of the driving seat. His wealth of experience in the motor racing world was reflected dramatically in the performance of this car". The photo itself is credited to "D. Spencer". The same chapter also shows a photo of the rear suspension, the engine, plus several racing pics of Doane plus Jim Adams racing the Tiger. All the photos are credited to D. Spencer.
The photo of the roadster with number B 522 was taken at a 1947 SCTA lakes meet. The car was owned and run by Carol Axtell of the Autocrats club. His best time that year was 110.70 mph. www.montgomeryhotrodbooks.com
Here are a couple of shots from the slides that are in this collection. These are just first run scans.
WOW!!! The Jimmy Summers Merc in colour, incredible! You are so kind to post these photos for all to see.
was this the start of the yellow car???????????????/ and the summers car thank you for sharing these photos with us. isnt the summers car setting in a field in Ohio now not for sale ?
That is another Summers built car a '36 3 window with fade away fenders. The Summers Merc is in the Pacific North West awaiting restoration.
WOW!!!!!! WOW!!!!!! I had seen one color photo of the Summers Merc in color before. Donn Lowe share it with me when he recieved a lot of material from the Summers Family when he did the Harry Bradley Designed 1940 Merc for John Bab****. But these two color photos in front of his shop are AMAZING!!! You have made my day.. week... month. Thank you so much for sharing these. And if you do have any photos of the Jimmy B mentioned 1936 Ford Chopped coupe with full fade away fenders..... Please post those. THANK YOU!!!
I wanna 2nd that suggestion! Also want to send my congrats on such an important find. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thanks for the comments, I keep getting a sweeeeeet surprise around every corner. When I finally scanned the Summers Merc slides and could see what was there I about dropped a pant-load! Thanks to rikster who pointed out to me that there just are not very many shots of the car in that stage, in color. With help from a couple of HAMB members we may get some of these photos published. None the less, these will become a visual record of one part in the story of hot rods and customs that we share. I'm just the caretaker of these gems. I got nothing more than lucky, but I can promise you that there is more to come...........................................
