So i fixed my transmission. WHOO! But now, i need to pull the rear brake drum off on the p***enger side. Its a 47 plymouth with tapered axle shafts I know you need a puller so i built this from 1/4 inch plate. The bolt head is 1-1/8th. Only problem is that this thing WILL NOT COME OFF Iv tried kroil, heat, cooling, gental tapping, harsh tapping, breaker bar, and finally a big impact until it actually stress cracked my puller. A simple request... HELP!
Man ,I have the same prob on my 49 dodge and I posted the same question..... I was told to go to autozone and rent a fwd axle puller ..and whatever I do don't hit the puller bolt end... I'm gonna do this Saturday and hope it works... ill let you know how it turns out. I'm not sure if your Plymouth is running or not but if it is they also suggested that I remove the kotter pin and back the axle nut off a couple of turns.... but leave the lug nuts on, then drive in a slow circle until you hear a POP ...then your drum is lose....... hope it helps
get some gibbs brand. if you cant, try a 50/50 mix of atf and acetone. apply liberally, introduce gentle vibration. repeat every 12 hrs for 3 days.
The puller shown directly above made by Ken Tool is what you want. You can get extra legs so it pulls on all studs. It's expensive..150 bucks or so new.Used ones come up on Ebay. If the car is driveable so say to loosen the axle nut and drive around slow for a bit might help. I had trouble on a Willys even with the expensive Ken Puller.Puller very tight, hammered on the puller stud and all that.Using a cutting head on the torch I heated the hub quickly ,but not too hot, maybe 400 degrees.Waited a bit and it popped off.
The puller that Toymaker put up is the one I had to use on my 61 Dodge. A regular puller with an impact or ratchet won't work. You really have to hammer those arms hard to break those axles loose!
just heat it up until your spit sizzles off and whack it with a mallet, just keep the heat directed away from the shaft
I have the exact puller Toymaker has shown and it has never ever failed to remove a tapered hub. I have seen several at swap meets and if you plan on keeping the car I suggest you get one so brake jobs, seal replacement can be made a breeze to do.
I did the one on my Plymouth over several days. I tightened the puller as tight as I could with a wrench, smacked the end of the puller with a 2 lb. hammer and walked away. Next day, I smacked it again, and then easily got another turn on it with the wrench. Smacked it again and walked away until the next day. repeated the process for about 4 days, then POP! off it came. Just gotta be patient....
I've got one just like this and the extra arms too. If you want to borrow it pm me and we'll work it out. Jeff
Just ad heat to your homemade puller. heat evenly all the way around until you start to get some color and tap the hub out.
If the car is in drivable conditions, I was always told to loosen the hub nut and make a couple trips around the block. Make many turns, the lateral loads of the turns loosen the hubs. Once it is loose DO NOT continue to drive it.
I always removed the axles from my Plymouths with a length of chain bolted to the hub, then snapped like a whip...always worked on the 2nd or 3rd try. Later got a proper 3-legged puller which works great on tapered axle hubs like Mopar and early Ford.
If you know any guys who are into older CJ Jeeps they probably have access to one of the pullers like Toymaker showed. You might even find one at a local tool rental shop. You did take the cotter key out and back the nut off several turns?
As pointed out above, TIME does help...tightenthehelloutofit, wait, repeat. Protect axle...you should have a closed threaded cap for axle end, without that at least leave on nut, backwards and screwed out to flush with end of shaft. Easiest source of a cap...find a knocker type puller at fleamarket. Axle end can easily be mushroomed, leading to all kinds of additional fun.
C9 (RIP) made a puller that worked. He shared it with us here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18344&highlight=puller

I Have a similar Puller as the one pictured, it's lead such a rough life that the threaded hub has cracked and been rewelded 4 or 5 times and is about to need it again. Everyone is right here, get it a little warm and spray a ton of anything you can get and let it sit, then then use the puller, making sure you don't mushroom the axle, but you have to whack the **** out of it then it Goes POP!
I have a friend who had the puller mentioned above and after liberal soakings I beat on it with a splitting maul ...it began to wrap up...the drums never budged....
