Saw some pics on the news, Kiwis running out of houses holding their favourite lambs.....
    :)

Looks like you guys are OK by all accounts except to some damage to some possessions which must ****???? By that I mean no fatalities?

Apologise if I come across as flippant but Im living in the land of big quakes, over 1000 killed alone this year. :(

    Good luck rebuilding kiwi's.

  4. ****** hell, sounds nasty. Best of luck to all, hope its not as bad as it all seems right now.

I've lived through tornados, hurricanes and fires but don't know what I'd do with an earthquake. I know what I think I'd do after...put on some clean pants.;) You guys down there will be in my prayers tonight!

Groups of car folks from New Zealand have visited the Donut Derelicts car show in Huntington Beach CA the last few weeks. I wish them all well.

Latest news is that power, gas and water are slowly coming back on-line and that emergency services are coping fine.

You can watch our local news at www.tvnz.co.nz I'm currently got the TV on and getting updates.

  17. About 12 hours into it now and things are not looking a lot better.
This is a major NZ city affecting around half million people.
Some power back on which in itself is causing problems, fires etc.
The Army has been called in for security.
It is 5.30pm here and a stormy freezing night is forcast.
A lot of people have no homes to go back to.
Luckily no deaths a very few serious injuries.
Rodders on the NZ hot Rod forum are recording damaged sheds rods etc..
Luckily I am in a different island but wish all those down south a speedy recovery.

    No offence taken Pete!

I am a Kiwi, that is presently located in Guangxi, China.

I am not surprised at all the fatalities in the Sichuan earthquakes during 2008, the building standards here are way below substandard [ usually caused by corrupt officials turning a "blind eye" for a fee]
The biggest threat to human life here in China, is trying to cross the road as a pedestrian [ there are no enforced road rules here]

Kiwi's are quite philosophical about such tragic events [ in a couple of weeks they'll be TXTing "earthquake jokes" to everybody ]

Last year there was Tsunami warnings in NZ, the Civil Defence people were getting "pissed off" with people ignoring their warnings and wanting to go surfing.

Unlike China, NZ is reasonably "earthquake proof" and damage is usually minimal [there are always exceptions to the norm' ]
    .
Earthquakes are quite a common occurance in NZ, In July 16 2009 there was an earthquake in Fiordland, NZ that was one of the largest earthquakes of 2009 anywhere in the world!

The damage was Zilch [ Zero ] nobody lives in Fiordland.
Lack of population is probably NZ's greatest ***et when these incidents occur.

Most of the Christchurch damage is to the older buildings [ usually facades ] which is a shame!
I also heard that the emergency services have reported a higher than normal number of "Cardiac Complaints"

I hope everything is back to normal A.S.A.P in NZ

    Regards Kerry

  20. The biggest problems they face from now on is the likes of sewerage and water.
The roads are a mess with offsets of up to a couple of metres in places.
A lot of houses and shops etc will need to be pulled down as they are now in danger of collapsing.

On another note, a plane has crashed in the south island killing 9 people.

Yeah I read about that, 1 private plane kills more than a 7.4 earthquake..
I cant read too much about the damage while here in China

All the pics seem to be of the same building [taken from different angles]
are the journos being over-sensationalizing ****ers again, or is it really bad there in Chch?

  22. It is bad Kerry.
I guess the worst buildings get the most coverage though.

Property and possessions are replacable, lets hope the situation is back to normal soon.

Like when a friend wrecked my Lotus Cortina in 2001, I just had to get stuck in and rebuild it [ I couldn't replace it ]
Christchurch people are pretty open minded, they'll get things back to normal in no time.

I also heard rumours about looting!! is this true??

  24. I hear the looting is true, that is why the Army has been called in for security duties. Its a sad thing, nowhere is safe from that sort of thing anymore.

I also heard about the plane crash on a skydiving site I frequent, it must have gone in from a very low al***ude to take a load of kitted up skydivers with it. NZ has not had a good 24 hours.

Lets hope things start looking up for them.

    Doc.

  25. Looting is totally untrue, just two ****heads this morning smashed a window to grab some items but were nabbed straight away by the Police as they were already out in force.

  26. Kiwi Helrod, there must be a little truth to it. I was informed by members of the Army security force, it was part of their deployment brief that there duty was to curtail looting? Just going from what I was told by the soldiers themselves??

    Doc.

    That's more like the truth!
I hope they "accidentally walk into the door" at the police station.

RE: my comments about the journo's previously .

  28. They have locked down the center of town because of all the "old" (late 1800s/early 1900s) buildings are falling down and also to keep all the "rubber neckkers" away also a big fire aswell at the moment. Got to remember too that it's a Saturday night.... town is usually buzzing with people out wineing & dinning.

  29. About the Journo's, actually and amazingly (THIS TIME), NO they Have'nt over sensationalized it at all..... IT IS BAD. We are one of the lucky ones that have power & water (although it only trickles out of the tap) on tonight. The TV camera's haven't ventured out into the suburbs yet.
