Got a '73 360 mopar for my hot rod. What kinda rides should I look for in Auto-Salvage Yards to get my manual trans from? (Anything besides dodge trucks? Or are the dodge trucks pretty much it?) Were 5 (or more) speeds available/how difficult are they to adapt? Thanks!
Dakota pickups '88 and later, also 1/2 ton P/U's, some jeeps, all after '88 have the right bolt pattern, need to get it all, yoke, flywheel etc. Flywheels are different, search posts by 73RR, he is the guru on here on all things Mopar!
I did mine with a Tremac TKO500 and a Lakewood bell housing that converts from small Chrysler to Chevy. That little bit of trick opens allot of possibilities as far as transmissions, too.
On abodiesonly.com there is a lot of information on using a t-5 with a small block mopar. Looks like a straight forward deal once you get the bellhousing.
Never tried it, but I would think that a Viper T56 6 speed would be an easy swap. The V10 is basically a 360 with 2 extra cylinders. I'm not sure if there were any flywheel changes (like Chevy, when they went to 1 piece rear main), so I'd check that part to be sure. Worst case, you could use a McLeod bellhousing with the right adapter to use just about anything behind it.
i can't ***ist with the trans info for a mopar, but that 360 was a rockin engine that put a LOT of big-blocks to shame. long ago i drove a delivery van with a 360 4bbl. the thing was the untimate sleeper. lol...
I have a 39 Plymouth 2 door that I am having a body off restoration completed on. I am getting a 408 stroker built and am looking at a tremec 5 speed as well from a company in Tenn. What can you tell me about your ****** motor set up and how it drives? Am interested in hearing about it.
look into the "new venture 3500" 5spd it came in dodge trucks. i've got the chevy version in my 55 chevy and i love it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Venture_Gear_3500_transmission
I have an AX15 ****** from a 98 Dakota 3.9 that I'm installing in my 41 Plymouth. Havent' got it running yet but it fits well and I'm told it's a good transmission. I've mated it up with a 88 Dakota rear axle with 3.55 gear. I also am using a 360 engine. I gave the 98 flywheel to a machinist today to do the external balance mod to it. See my thread ***led "A Question of Balance" for more information. Also there is another thread I started asking the same question you asked. Good luck
IMO I'd steer clear of the ax's and nv's unless its a light car that you aren't gonna be beating the hell out of. AX's will fail behind v6's (thats why they stopped using them for the NV's). And a mild small block will kill an NV3500. I had killed 2 in my supercharged 318 dakota (385rwhp). I'd look into the TKO's, for the strength
the viper's use a different bellhousing bolt pattern. I'm doing the Viper T56 swap into my Dakota with a quicktime blowproof bellhousing
