I have a '61 Chevy pu I got last month, truck sat for 18 years. Should I buff it out or leave it alone?
For once, those of us who like shiney and clean are ahead of the "Leave it! It's perfect!" crowd. Start with a hot soap and water hand wash and scrub off as much oxidation as you can before you polish.
Hey, I'd worry 'bout fifty year old brake lines, wires, the fuel system and tyres, long before the finish! Powdered laundry soap (Tide) and a stiff scrub brush will make short work of the dead paint. After this, you can dry it off and decide how much of a shine you wanna pull out of the finish. Maybe just a couple coats of a good wax? " Do not be to quick to drink the Kool-Aid "
Make it look as good as you can. It will never look like a fresh paint job. You will always be able to tell that it has some years on it but the owner still cares about it.
use a quart of kerosene in two gallons of water and soap, it will clean it very nice and easy, let it dry, then buff it................
Hard to tell from the tiny picture, but it appears that the truck has some rust-through on the front fender, and perhaps some areas of bare metal/rust? If so, I'd leave it as is. Shiney paint w/areas of rust-through/rust doesn't do it for me. My $0.02.
How thick is the paint thats on there, are you just going to buff thru it? Id try the CLR trick on the rusted areas then carefully apply some neutralizer with a brush to the area. What does the kerosene so for the paint, does it get some oil into it and help revive it?
wax it up, and a creative repair on the fender. You can mix a small amount of color from the small 1/2 pint cans at the hardware. Dust it on sort of dry on that repair. Wow a new trend on hamb....most replies wanting to make something nicer.
