I'm putting a model A cross member in my 32 frame. Does anyone have any pictures of how they installed thiers or technical advice.
Here's a link to Rolf's build site. There's a condensed verison in tech archives. http://www.classicroad.com/modelA/frame.htm
Square the rails up and put some temporary crossmembers in to keep everything straight while you work. Then measure, cut, and weld in the model A crossmembers. It's pretty straight forward. I like to weld the cross members to the frame, then box it afterwards.
I like to set them a little forward from the the stock position. The caster plus a dropped axle will move the wheel back. Putting the crossmember a little forward looks better as the wheel is then near it's stock position. It looks a little better still if it is moved a bit more forward. I suggest 3/4" to 1"
I forgot to say I was looking for information on the rear cross member. I already setup the front. Thanks for info.
When you run a quick change in the rear you need to run the model A rear cross member to clear the rear end. That's why I'm running the "A" cross member.
I'm not at the shop untill Tuesday. But I have a A rear crossmember in my car, if you need any measurements feel free call me. Send a PM for my number. Here's a link to my chassis- http://picasaweb.google.com/112820619618561770062/Wanted32Ford#
Require a little more information on your build...... Your QC, are you running original '40 Ford axles with the cast brackets for the shackles or is it a new QC wih 9" Ford axles without any brackets ? The placement of the rear cross member will be slightly different for each application.....
Candy-Man I have a old Halibran magnesium QC. I also have magnesium side bell adapters so I can run 9" ford axels. I'll be welding on spring perches.
actually, it's very common if a quickchange is being used. from my experience, you have to either box the frame first or extend the crossmember to make it wide enough. the aftermarket "stock" crossmembers are a bit wider so you won't have to. here is a thread by Bass who did one. his frame is a work of art. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=263380
The angle of the rear cross member is level. I pie cut the frame where it starts to kick up 1" bringing the rear rails where the crossmember attaches up 4" to bring the car lower.
