Can i put on ford f-1 brakes on a 1940 banjo rear end? Sounds stupid I know but sometimes my brain freezes and I can't think straight.

nope, the hubs/drums are 12", not 11" like the F1.

So I would have to find Lincoln bendix brakes to do the swap? I really want self energizing brakes all the way around.

HI: Are you having trouble with the early ford brakes? If they are set up like Ford designed them they work very well.

Not having trouble, just want to have them. I have no problem with the 40 brakes just like how the f-1's stop, and I like the fact that they are self energizing, parts are cheaper, and they do stop better.

hotrod8, I love what you did with that, I want to do that exact thing. Did you have to machine the new drums for the hub?

I ran F1 brakes up front and early Ford brakes out back - stopped fine.

On the conversion, is the rear brake as converted to early Ford pattern deeper dish than the front brake? I'm wondering here about the alternative of bolting a FRONT F1 in back, then installing the emergency brake hardware and tubes from a rear. Issue would obviously be whether a drum over a '40 hub would be at the right depth...

I have been looking at doing the same thing! What Bruce suggested is the route I was thinking. It would be nice to know if there are any depth issues.

hotrod 8, that is a very good tech piece. You should post it here on the HAMB during Tech Week or something...very well done.

Yes you can, if you change the entire end of the housing and axle and side gear in the diff for the F1 parts. You get the added advantage of retained wheel bearings.
Checkthe tech threads for brake info .

There was a tech thread some time about using the backing plates and brakes from a 66 Chevy Station wagon, and the original 12" banjo hubs and drums?????
