    Hey everyone
I am putting a 700R4 automatic transmission into my 53 chev P/U. The trans I have had an electronic speedo set up and I am looking at swapping it out to mechanical. what I need to figue out is what DRIVE and DRIVEN gears I am going to need for the transmission.

I knwo there are a few numbers need to calculate the ratios so here is what I have:

    AXLE GEAR RATIO: 3:42
    TOTAL TIRE HEIGHT: 26"
    ENGINE: 327 CID

If there are any transmission gurus on here I would greatly appreciate any info you could give me. The techs at my local dealer are not helpful at all nor do they really know anything about this stuff thanks to the glory of technology and everything being electronic.

Thanks again Guys and I look forward to hearing what some of you may know about this.

    Thanks Bud!!

Anyone else out there have any input? I appreciate all the info I can get. Transmissions are a grey area for me.

I ran the numbers also and came up with the same 15 on the drive and 40 on the driven.

The green gear is the drive gear and the other one is the driven.

The 15 gear you need is GRAY ...

And the 40 gear you need is black ...

You will need the " bullet " for a 40 to 45 tooth gear.

I did this same conversion on my 700R4 for my 32 Ford ( with SBC ).
Simple to do and easy to find the parts. I bought a new " bullet " and driven gear ... and my transmission guy had a box full of drive gears to pick thru.

    :D

I believe all of this is from Bowtie Overdrives. I just did this two weeks ago and all the parts came to around $70.00. Was about a 45 minute job.

This was the kit i bought for $70.00. They also have a calculator for you to figure out what gears you will need. It's pretty basic information needed.

I ran the numbers for mine, got the right gears, ran a rebuilt speedo.

I then went for a test drive up to 90 MPH with a portable GPS... dead nuts on.
