my humble opinion is a ford 9" of fiftys vintage.the olds had a perfect circle out back and this is oblong like the ford logo.my guess.possibly 57 t-bird?
Olds. Or be real gutsy and find a full floater Dana 60, outta a truck. Have you seen the book G***er Wars? Lots of different stuff in there. Jay
Its a 57 ford 9" ,oblong w flat band in the center ,bottom drain plug- I just went to that 9" ID page posted on here some time back , , its not a choice thing , Its an Austin i bought a bit ago and not here yet , it'll stay in it as the 9" has alot of parts avail. and gear choices CHEAP, the olds on the hand does'nt have either. all be it more nostalgic and TOUGH, this car was built in the early days of the g***ers and they chose a 9" ,who am I to argue? lol ,beside saves the trouble of finding building and modifing another differential, add some ladders and i'm done. These early 9"s look great w a pinstriped pumpkin LOOKIT DEM FUNKY WEELIE SPRINGS :O ,get awful high b4 they work,

That's a rare housing you have there! For my Falcon, I took a setup I had in a '72 Mustang and narrowed it to fit. It's got a Ford Motorsport nodular iron case w/ Daytona pinion support, "soft" Detroit Locker, and 31 spline moser axels. This worked well in the Mustang. Supposed to be good up to 600 hp. It's agood feeling knowing your rear end is not gonna come apart.Currie has a nice 11" F-150 drum brake kit for these too. This is what I would go with. As usual, JMO. Bet you can't wait to get that Austin home!!!!!
mike we got a 57 olds rear end out at dads its way under snow right now but is sitting off a trail dont know if you need one but we got one if you do
Mike - Does this mean that you OWN the Austin now? If so, congrats! Worth all the stress, just for the wheelie bars alone (those are a trip!)...I too, have discovered an old G***er - more on that later...Do you know what's inside that rearend yet (gears, spool)???
deals been made, waiting for my shipper buddy to get word he can go , ( his wife just had a B**** biopsy , and he doesn't want to leave to he gets word she's ok ,understandable ,but ya its mine , unless something unforseen comes up , Tiki may want that rearend , gotta go digout my 40 chevy b4 the weekend snow......
I'm back,I drove the 40 Chev tudor up on the trailer and back off again, got a bit hot idling but it has been about 25 years since it idled that long , all the gauges work , heater blows air , brake lights work , not bad
Either would work fine, as would a 8 3/4 Mopar or Dana. I think the best tradeoff of parts availability, strength, and cost is the 9 inch. The really early nine inchers (maybe before 65?) are not as strong as most of the later ones. If the car will be mostly street driven, and not hammered upon (trans brake, slicks, etc) it probably makes no difference, but if you are going to get serious from time to time, the later housings make sense.
HERE YA GO! I thought you all sw this one- I hate yto say it, but I MAY pull the both rebuilt -58 Poncho and 4spd hydro (definately NOT cheap) and sell it in favor of a sbc 350 4 bolt /350 turb I have been saving for a project like this or the other way around- keep it as is and sell what i have saved, one or the other has to go to pay for doing this car.
Congrats Mike! Just try to remain calm until it gets home...If you don't like the ring and pinion in that 9", I have two sets for mine (5:13 and 4:56) and can only use one at a time. I won't know for sure which one I want until I can do some testing, and that might be a while, but let me know. I have the 4:56 in it now. Hope you decide to run the Poncho drivetrain, but nobody can blame you if you go SBC... (I still can't talk about my G***er find yet - maybe in a couple of days)
As cool as the Pontiac is I'd go for the SBC in the Austin. There were hundreds of these that were raced with a small block and I don't recall but only one that used a Poncho. That makes it the TRADITIONAL choice. Frank
after all the *****ingI did about my buddy putting a high bling ch***is under an true oldy AV8 sports cpe , i feel a little dumb even thinking about changing a survivor over , BUT I have a lot tied up in a 2-4bbl tunnel rammed all vintage equipt 383 sbc and a manual VB 350 turb, that is just crying for a body, there isn't alot out there for a 58 Poncho motor w its small size beyond maybe some alum valve covers, there is also the fact that the money from selling such a rare fresh Motor /Trans would go along way to getting the rest of the car done.
here is that 40 i dug out of the snow yesterday , backed it out of the garage for these pics this morn.
