Might be swaping my 57 for 31 to a fellow HAMBER. Im in IL and he is in Al. Alabama doesnt have ***les but Illinois does. How do I go about getting ***le and tags after the trade??? Anyone ever done this on something as old as a 1931??? Thanks for any help!!! Rob
my 55 chevy came from alabama had a tag registration with about 10 previous owners names on it... wasn't a problem in tennessee.
I have sold several auto to Ill.. All they needed was current registration and I also sent a nortized bill of sale.. Make sure the VIN plate matches and is attached to the car also make sure the numbers are readable.. ..Good luck as some DMV folks like to show their power and make up rules as they go.. One was numbers are missing they did not know old car serial numbers have fewer digets than moderen cars. I hope this helps... Bobby...
As of late in 2009 all pre '48 vehicles applying for ***le in Illinois will have to be verified for VIN, even with a valid ***le from another state. I don't know if that also applies to Illinois ***led vehicles, but without any ***le and being out of state to boot, be prepared for something a bit more complex than paying a few fees and getting your ***le shortly. You likely will be required to follow the 'Bonded ***le procedure. That will include getting an appraisal as to it's current value, (a Bill of Sale MAY help, but don't count on it), paying Use (sales) Tax, ***le fee and a Bond. Call your local DMV and asked questions first. Like Ray said, Illinois just threw a huge monkey wrench into getting a ***le to these old cars/trucks. I was told about a fellow up in Northern Illinois that had $40,000 plus in a car & the state won't give him a ***le. Why??? you're guess is as good as mine. All I know it sure does ****s to be him right now. Oh and get ready to be told your $500 POS is now a $50,000+ Barrett Jackson car/truck according to the great Illinois DMV so they can try & **** you over the taxes to be paid...joe
If you have a valid registration, bill of sale (and you are not fudging the value) and the VIN matches you should not have much problem even with the inspection. It's when you start fudging numbers and not having stuff match up is when it gets difficult.
Just be sure everything matches and you have a noterized bill of sale. Any car coming into IL from a non-***le state raises a red flag at the down state DMV. They will be going over it with a fine tooth comb looking for something (anything and everything) wrong. Expect to be in discussion with the state of IL dmv people, and I wouldn't expect it to go smoothly, quickly, or cheaply. Whatever you do, do not loose your cool, or the process gets worst fast. Really, I think I'd just go for the bonded ***le, might cost a little more upfront, but may be a lot easier in the end. Gene
Thanks for the help guys. Im not looking forward to this at all but thanks to our fine "broke" state of IL. I will be jumping through there high priced hoops. The 31 Im trading for is a new build with fresh tags, Im sure this will ****! Thanks again
just bought a 55 from ala they gave me a letter that stated ala was not a ***le state on cars before 1975 and a tag recept brought into fla had in inspected and got a ***le
I really don't think the applicant gets to make the call on a bonded ***le or not. What will determine that is the DMV, after reviewing the individual cir***stances. The two biggest hurdles are matching VIN to paperwork and an appraisal from an accepted source. Until December 2009 I had been a licensed auto dealer in Illinois for 33 years. I have also been an old car hobbyist since the late 50's. I have done several of these appraisals for locals with Dept of Revenue conflicts as to value. However, I did an appraisal last Jan (2010) that happened to be questioned as to the qualifications of the appraiser (me) and I got a call from some lady at the State. She wanted to know if I was a licensed dealer or an "officer of a car club". Those are the two categories she said are considered acceptable for appraisal purposes. My experience thru Dec 31, 2009 did not meet the test on Jan 10, 2010, when I wrote the appraisal. Guess I have to join a car club and get elected to something. I might point out at this time, there are two depts involved here......The Dept of Revenue for Use Tax (sales tax), which is where the value of the vehicles is often disputed, and the secretary of State's office which is concerned with preventing 'fraudulent' ***les and/or stolen parts. It is the latter dept, and fraudulent ***le apps that have gained their attention, that is bringing a host of problems to the hot rod community. While WE may know (or at least believe) our rod is NOT a stolen vehicle, and that "Historic Do***ent" we bought at a swap meet or on-line may not actually be the ***le to our pile of parts, and no one is being cheated or harmed, using that do***ent (***le) to gain a ***le and registration for out pile of parts is viewed, and correctly so, as a "fraudulent ***le" Now, before you start flaming me for that last statement, I have no quarrel with that process for as long as it worked. Although it could lead to problems eventually if numbers didn't match, it was an expedient means to an end. Ask me how I know as much as I do about the Sec'y of State's current policy. Ray
Man, we are having tons of problems here in south eastern Illinois. Talk to the DMV before you go any further. It may be better to miss a good deal than to have to deal with the DMV after the fact.
Hey this is Doug up in Lincoln, unless its the deal of the century I would p***. The "lady" that has the finial word is unbelievably tuff. She has destroyed 2 clear out of state ***les for me,one on a 26 coupe because the seller signed it off 45 days prior to me filling, told me bonded ***le was the only way.Second on a 29 coupe again clear current Tenn ***le ,she ran the vin and it came up for a 30 and ***le was for 29 tried to explain that motors got changed back then NO get bonded. Have a friend got a stock 29 sedan out of state ***le sent his paper work in this Feb and is still trying to ***le it. Ive got a 26 coupe bone stock KY ***le scared to send the paper work in all out of state ***le s are pulled sent to quality control for 10 days then end up in MT Vernon (her office ) and literaly can lay there for months. Then when you finialy track it down ,she will 99.9 times out of 100 tell you bonded ***le. GOOD LUCK.
I would not do it. You are going to get your *** turned into a hat by the state, I would say to see if you could ***le your friends car first and then do the deal, but they may still come back at you over taxes and want the thing bonded even after it is clear. Sorry. You know you have to have the car finished, painted and running to bond it, I bought mine for 1500, the appraiser came out with a number that just floored me, no way I will ever get that kind of money out of this thing, now the state wants a bag of cash, 3x more than I paid, If you don't pay within 10 days they send you to a collector and he hacks on 25%. Then you have to back fight to get your money back. Oh yeah, that notarized bill of sale, you must, MUST, MUST HAVE that to keep them off of you, do the deal right in front of a notary and have them sign as witness to all points of the transaction, especially price or the state will say the thing is worth 100 grand and want 10 grand in tax. I have a word for revenue but I don't want to melt the server.
i know here in ohio i bought a car from GA they dont use ***les all i had to have the a current registration for the car from GA and ohio gave me a ***le no problems hope this helps poorman
1st off, I would get on IL's state web site and hunt up the applicable statutes from both DOR and SoS and then copy everything off so I had hard copies in my hands. Then, I'd get into the SMOG and Safety rules and do the same. Then, you might just contact your Rep and tell him that there is a person in vehicle licensing that is making life hell for us car enthuisists, and would you please look into it. Heck, go all the way up the chain of command through DOR and SoS and then maybe even the top dawg, IL Gov. Can't do any harm and doing so just may get her retired early! pdq67
