tons of cars in the Rochester area...we, Rochester Street Rods have around 170 members, and the club has been around for 40 yrs...not all have rods, lots of 60 and 70 Iron, quite a few drag cars a good mix..there are other clubs in the area ..I would bet a get together in Rome would make it....start small and let it build, but as we found out about putting on a show, when ya talk about it there are lots of guys who say they will help, but when it is time to step up everyone has other plans for that day..or they will go to the show then complain about how it was done, should have done this, done that etc, thats why we don't do shows anymore...talk to others on the HAMB who have put on a gathering and see what happens.
    Good Luck

I say go for it . start with a small show and before long word will get around very fast and that show will really grow quickly . We need more show that dictated to our style of hotrods ! There are not many on the east coast besides the Latimore Show that only lets traditional hotrods in . I am sure there are some but I don't know of any except the one that Larry and his gang puts on . There was one up Pittsburg was a few weeks ago that is traditions also . I think the Drifter cc put that one one .
Need to spread the word that traditional hot rods are still around and growing strong !

The club I belong to goes to Syracuse and Lake George every year. Our only problem is finding rooms, our group gets larger every year. My wife goes with me to Lake George she loves the area, they provide a shuttle to the shopping centers from all the hotels and motels. We always went to the York Pa. show for the last 25 years. York is not the show it use to be. And up state is a nicer ride. Good luck

Allright, I've found some places on Griffiss AFB that look promising if we want to get something going.

Mohawk Valley Aviation is hosting a vintage airplane exhibit in May, and has asked the local car club to bring some cars. I know this may be a bit of a late notice, but now we know that an ''on-base'' business is willing to host a show. If we decided to do something later on I'd bet that they would be willing to help/host. These guys now own/rent quite a bit of space.

Sent you a PM, before I saw this, old planes and old cars go nice together. If they have enough space a gymkana is likely doable, might could get the SCCA timing folks if there is no conflict. Also thereused to be a MO-HUD sports car club chapter but I don;t know if they still are in operation.

Just curious, whats the difference between a "streetkhana" and a "gymkhana"?

    Is that a Po-tay-toe <> po-tah-toe kind of thing?

I just got off the phone with the president of the local car club(Tappet Twirlers) We discussed what it takes to get a show started, he pretty much said the same stuff that was talked about in this thread.

He did go on to tell me who to contact at the Air Force Base, so now i have a lead.

Also, i took this directly from their website. This is an open event, and they are looking for cars. I now have the contact info for the people putting this show on. This is the first show, if it works they would like to do it annually. I will call them to see if we can "ride the coat-tails" of the show, and possibly have our own area during the show.
MVCC Aviation is going to have a Fly-In May 21 and would like some of our Cars
To come and Display. There is going to be a Fly Over at Noon. There will be a
    Military display of C-130, C-5, Chinook and other Helicopters. 10AM – 4PM.

Everyone Let me know if your interested, and if you can make the show. Like I said, this is located on a government airbase that was first opened in the 1940s. Loads of history there.

Update: I just got off the phone with a member of the aviation club that is hosting this event. There will be food and vendors at this show, and they really want the community to attend and support this event.

I told him my ideas of what I'd like to do, he seemed very open to what i had to say. This will have to be discussed at there meeting next week, I will try my best to be there.

I think this could be the making for a kick *** show. Traditional hotrods and airplanes go hand and hand.

Show location: Mohawk Valley CC. aviation hangar, 116 Langley Road, Rome NY 13440

Well the difference between an autocross and a gymkhana, is the course for the gymkhana is more technical, and features reversals of direction like stop boxes, reversing sections, and tighter courses, which is a bigge test of driver skill. An autocross is generally a more open course featuring turns, sloloms, and maye a figure 8 section, scored on elapsed time, with penalties for off course and cones hit.

I would imagine a streetkhana is a *******ation of either or.

Not sure if anybody would be interested in this or not but Watkins Glen is not far from Syracuse and the racing ***ociation there holds various events throughout the year that might be of particular interest for many HAMBers. One such event is the Vintage Grand Prix and Auto Show. This is a beautiful area of upstate N.Y. that has a long history of Racing that includes everything from Endurance, NASCAR and Formula One. Someone questioned in an early post why some events dont work or continue on very long. Aside from waning interest or lack of participation, I think a major stumbling block is indeed related to the areas of choice not embracing these kind of events. The Glen is not one of these places. Just thought I would p*** along the idea.
Heres a link if your intersted in checking out the Glen.

I am going to the meeting this wednesday to discuss our interests. If I could get a quick head count before i went that could be useful.

Rcranger and me went to the meeting earlier today. Everything sounds promising at this time, they are just waiting for the final word from one person. We talked about setting up our own little "old school" area in the show, they said that they would be happy to accommodate.

Some things i learned at the meeting:
-The show is at a new location, but still on the base. Now literally on the active tarmac.
-There will be a pancake breakfast to benefit the Aviation club from 7-9am
-The Rome Marine Corps will be selling chicken bar-b-q at the show, all benefits from that go to toys for tots
-This is a free show for all who attend, but remember the Aviation club could always use the donations. They are putting forth a lot of effort to get this event rolling.
-This is an actual Fly-in for people with personal aircrafts.
