So, I got this 58 9 inch ford rear out of an Edsel, it seems to be just the right width for me. Is there a trick to removing the drums? They seem to be almost welded on.:(

Take a small file to clean ALL the rust around the center hub that sticks through the drum, and use PB blaster or penentrating oil you have..

Then use the hammer to give a sharp hit on the front outer edge of the drum at a 45 degree angle all the way around. What you are trying to do is get some movement at the center hub that is stuck with rust.

If that does not show some movement at the hub flange, then heat the drum right around that hub...then hit again. Propane torch might be hot enough if you take some time.

When I say use a file, you can sharpen the end of a file like a chisel with a grinder to get a super sharp edge to scrape that axle hub real good.

After getting that loose, you may find the shoes also rusted to the drum.

Recently did this very job on TWO Edsel/Fomoco 9" ers. Really had been setting for many years and defied the methods already suggested. What I ended up doing was ro remove the two bolts that hold the wheel clyinder in place, cut the heads off the little pins that retain the shoes to the backing plate...........THEN got the BFH and a very stout straight punch.........put the punch through the wheel cylinder hole and drove the drum off from the back side. Be careful to not put the punch against the axle flange as that will obviously do no good.

All the brake hardware was rusty junk anyway and the drum did have some protruding 'bumps' on the perimeter around the axle flange area, but they could be heated and flattened. I intend to use new drums anyway, though.
