Hey, my dad is building a J2 for his 57 chev, and is wondering how to adapt a 4 speed (preferably chevy) to the 371. Is there a bellhousing that allows a direct bolt in? If not, are there any adaptor plates around? What is involved in this swap?

Any help or leads are appreciated

    Thanks
    Chris

There is a way to adapt the Chevy trans to Olds. First you need the correct flywheel for your engine/starter combination. There is some interchange possible but later engines were external balance. The next piece is the Olds to early Ford (32-48) trans. This is typically a 3/8 or 1/2" thick steel or aluminum plate. From there you can use the Offy 5174A or 5272A adapter. One version uses the early Chevy clutch fork and the other the Ford cross shaft and fork (other option is a hydraulic throw out bearing). This combination will give you the option of any of the "muncie" pattern GM tranmissions including the T5.
