Good luck tonight, Roy. It'll be a bit busy at the track tonight. They are having a jet car, as well as a memorial for VW racer Hector Urias, who passed away last week.

On another note, does anyone have any ideas about "grafting on" a stock style air cleaner unit, to a metal base to fit a Holley for my Comet? I've tried this once before, on a cowl induction Chevelle, but I'm curious if it'll even fly. My idea is to find an old Ford aircleaner assembly, cut out the bottom, graft on a generic base that'll clear the Holley's bols, then leave the top off, and cut out the underside of the Crite's hood so that the air cleaner assembly will pull in outside air. Am I crazy? I think a twelve inch would work. Any such "Ford animal" out there? It'd definately be different, and I think cool as well. I"m also trying to figure out how to incorporate one of those brass expansion tanks I pilfered from the Kennedy brothers. Hey, extra cooling capacity, right?? !!

Thanks for any guidance from the Comet contigent!!

Hey guys sorry if posting in the wrong section I am building a 65 comet two door hardtop for a street/strip I was thinking of getting a ram air hood, fenders, doors and bumpers from crites. Has anyone used these parts and how was the fit and quality of the parts.
    thank you
    Josh

  3. Dale, my stock ford air cleaners from the 60s always fit a Holley carb. I'm sure your plan should work. I'll look and see if I can find pics of a ram air I made from a stock 69 fairlane air cleaner.

1965comet Josh;I have the Crites pieces on my 65 and they are a good fit.The fenders do need some tweaking as they are made a little long[towards the door] and I had to rebuild the lower bolt flange on the drivers side as it held the fender too low.The hood just needs light triming to set your gaps. The bumper just needs holes drilled for mounting and the parking light openings need to be cut out.DO NOT use stock hood springs, they are too strong and will break the hood. ROY.

Good point Roy made about the springs. Crites won't even suggest anything over the phone with regards as to what to do, and after hearing a story about someone trying to pull a hood down, while it had pins in the hinges to keep it propped up, I went down to the hardware store, and found a set of weak springs that really did the trick well. Just enough tension to let you bring the Crites hood down, with enough lift to keep it in place.

Most of the Mustang/Shelby type suppliers have special light springs for use on the Shelby hoods.

Dale;I use a home made prop rod on mine.I've seen cars with glass hoods bowed as much as 2" using stock springs!!!!Irwindale was a ZOO last night, jammed with spectators that park so close you can't get your car back in your pit! I think they need a dedicated pit area with no spectator parking. The track was not all that great either, most guys I talked too had their 60' time way off.I still learned a couple things, put more base in the clutch and it helps to have fuel in the cell before a run[OOPS]!!!!ROY.

This was last weekend at Mega Ford Weekend in Mission BC. Jamie Roth is in the 64. It has a 347 with a tunnel ram and a Jerico and runs 11.50's. My 65 with a 351C and a toploader was about 1/2 a fender behind all the way down the track. I ran a personal best of 11.599 but not on this run. Jamie won our class of Nostalgia Stock which was 10.75-12.00. It was pretty cool. Brian

I just found this scan of an old picture. This was probably in 1983 or so? I cant remember. I still have that hood and Boss 429 scoop. I had the car painted in the early 90's and figured I would have a stock hood painted at the same time. I have been thinking about putting the old hood back on. I kind of like the old look. Of course fiberglass would be nice. I jumped on the scales at Mission. My car weighs 3280 lbs. It needs a diet. Brian

Thats a great shot, Brian! It never ceases to amaze the pictures that constantly get dug up!

We put in a ten hour day on the Rocket, today. Its great when you almost cross off a whole lined page of "to do's", only to start another half pages of the things you forgot to write down the first time!!! Having two automotive engineers work on your car has to be one the most interesting things! Talk about being anal!! But, the spark plug wires are darned near perfection in my opinion:

By the way, did you know you have cardboard (WHAT??!!) stuffed inside your stock Ford driveshaft for harmonic dampening?

  16. That is one good looking engine bay.

Brian, I like the Boss scoop, I had one for my comet then decided to sell it. I'm hoping to weigh my comet this week. We have a scale at work.

Dale;any more progress on the "Rocket"?Anybody hear from the Colorado Gang?I think some midwestern good old boys kidnapped them!!!!Roger;my 65 weighs 2985 without me in it.That is with a back half frame, full cage and glass fenders, hood and front bumper, which is strange because that is what it weighed stock!! ROY.

Back in the saddle again, this Friday, and Saturday, and most likely Sunday. Had totake a break, do some real work to help pay the bills. Looks like Flowmaster may let me play with some of their new Hushpower exhaust pieces. These new pro series units are used in USAC, and are known to flow very well, but do not have the typical 'drone' of a chambered muffler. I'm hoping for a drive Saturday in it, then back to the list of to dos on it... Keep ya posted.

Dale;did you get me e-mail about the cooler? Ken;what did you break, and when? I was thinking of towing out after Jack decided not to go but my Son's father-in-law passed and I went to help take care of Grandkids and for the funeral. I couldn't of been much help for you anyway as I would have been in a different class.Trying to figure a way to control temps on my engine with the hardblok, knew it was going to be a challenge!!! Maybe I'll just run it on ALKY!!!! ROY.

WELL!!!!! I can say it definately does not sound too streetable in a shop, with just headers ! ! ! I would have just sauntered over to grab the video camera while Nick was eyeballing the start-up, but it did not go too smoothly. He immediately started filled up the transmission, and I chased leaks both top and bottom, mainly fuel system related. We had a terrible time with a Barry Grant Fuel log set-up. Its now in the trash, and brass fittings and a bit of rubber hose got us back in the running! And, when we got ready to lower it back down to Mother Earth, those funky brass combo metering valves do work worth a you-know-what!!!! Nothing to the back brakes!!! And it was quite a feat to get that darned thing plumbled!!! Now, I may have to rip it out. But all in all, one helluva great day!! The 'punch list' grows and diminishes, as I cross stuff off, only to put something else back on.. I"m all smiles.
