My overdrive solenoid is shorted out internally, so I need to pull it off the trans. Oh yeah it's in a '49 ford with the BW R10 overdrive. I got the two bolts off, but the plunger(?) seems like it is still attached internally. Please don't tell me I have to rip off the O/D unit to get the solenoid off.

I don't know about a Ford but on a Chevy you have to turn the selanoid a 1/4 turn and it will let go

That may be the answer. they used this over drive in studebakers, chryslers, packards, and who knows what else, so it might be the same as a chevy unit. How hard is it to get it back in?

i think if i remember right...you gotta make sure the manual lever is disengaged and you kinda turn and wiggle it out.when i had a 50 model overdrive in the t...when it went out i couldnt find one anywhere.

I think the solenoid from any R-10 is the same, R-11 too. 6 volt or 12 is probably the only difference except for the rare offset ones for the convertible boxed frame.
The book says to turn the solenoid clockwise 1/4 turn to remove it.

OOPS, let's resize that so you can read all the different cars that used the same overdrive.
