I have an Autolite acessory manifold (not heater core) type heater on my 36 ford flathead in my A coupe. I only have the part that goes around the exhaust manifold. Does anyone have pics of the rest of the heater? I can wrap my mind around how to use this thing with pipes and a blower fan but am wondering what the rest of the origional unit looked like so I can keep my eyes open at swap meets. Thanks in advance, -Adam.
That is aftermarket (Ford supplied vaguely similar rigs)...from the angle of tube at front, I believe it did not use a blower but was fed air like the '34 Ford hot air heater. That tube should I bvelieve have a short upward extension up to right behind the fan, flaring out into a scoop (rather like typical scoops used on Strombergs!) pointed into the fan blast. In back, you can steal all you need from the nearest Model A supplier...use the normal Model A heater entrance right through the lower firewall and cap it off with the repro door that shuts off the hot air. These things were typically partly dismantled in summer to avoid frying anyone.
Later Ford ones used intake up front not at fan, blower to deliver, and actual defroster vents and knobs. I think this one is entirely mechanical!
You could always tuck a computer fan in one of the tubes, they are small diameter high rpm and love 12 volt, but would also probably be fine on 6 volt too
Here is the aftermarket one that came in my 32 sport coupe. It just aimed at the exhaust manifold. No engine side sheet metal came with it. The lever at the bottom center shuts a ****erfly valve inside the cast iron body when flipped with your toe. This is the only one I've ever seen in 40 years of flea marketing. You will need a way to stop the airflow in the summer but it doesn't need to be very exotic. You'll need to use some drier vent hose to hook it up to your manifold heater.
Thanks guys, its gonna get real cold around here any day now and I don't plan on puttin the coupe away this winter.
Here is my Autolite version I took off my 37 sedan. It had a fireproof type canv*** hose from the manifold to the floorboard and probably a type of scoop like Bruce mentioned to pick up the air.
The shutoff doors similar to Tommy's but not as niceare reproduced...hit a Model A place like Bratton's. Ford used hot air heaters roughly 1933-38 exclusively and '39-42 as an option to hot water. They used a can like a muffler near the crossover pipe...can had a straight-through exhaust tube with fins, can carried two nozzles for air IN and OUT. First ones had the scoop to fan like I described, later ones added a blower motor at cowl and much more complex interior parts with tube junctions for heat, defros, and back seat delivery, and an array to shut or open the various possibilities. Don't worry about adding fans and such til you drive the thing...most of these things will cook you out of the car without any elaboration.
