Are the Dual Quad Batwing air cleaners used on Chevys the same as Cad/Olds/Pontiacs? They look the same to me.
I know the Chevy one is different from the others but I don't know enough about them to tell you how exactly how they differ.
it cant be that much different I would think...I see that Danchuck makes a repro one for the Chevys.I need one for a 56 Caddy Eldo.
the carbs are spaced farther apart , popular mod , to weld up the holes on the caddy aircleaner real chevy air cleaners were ten grand 20 years ago , bought a modified caddy for 1500
I also have been looking into the differance in the dual quad breathers between the various marques that used them. Sent me a PM or email and i'll share what i have. jerry.ashley28694@gmail.com
Carb position and oil bath pot clearance. Ten Grand? Never. 2500-3000.00 maybe at its best time. I've bought and sold a few.
Ok, here you go. With out permission from the author... http://www.pontiacsafari.com/L1EarlyV8Pontiacs/56DualQuad/BatwingAircleanerGuide.pdf
Glad BR-549 posted the link; and especially glad Len posted the information. Len had a dual quad Pontiac in the 1970's. Len and I corresponded quite a bit during that time. Len's list is missing one aircleaner (1955-56 Packard). From what I remember, the Packard unit is smooth, with central pots. I don't remember if the pots are tall or short. The Packard carbs, like everything but the Chevrolet, are on 9 inch centers. There is also a "kissin cousin" to these, a "delta wing" aircleaner used by the early 1957 J-2 Oldsmobile (three two-barrels). Obviously, the bottom differs to accomodate the three two-barrels. The top runs "annigoglin" (old hillbilly word) instead of perpendicular to the plane of the carbs. Of the dual quad units, the Cadillac is probably the most common (or it was). Lots of them have been converted to Chevrolet. This was a really popular conversion, as the Caddy units used to be available at maybe 1/3 the price for the Chevrolet. Here is a picture of the Pontiac dual quad without aircleaner showing how the choke tube came out of the center of the choke, necessitating the offset pot on the p***enger side. http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/1956p***engerside2x4.jpg Packard was more creative, fabbing a special 90 degree fitting that screwed onto the choke cap. The fitting required less room than the bend in the choke line. Jon.
Jon, will you be at Hershey and do you have a space number? I would like to meet with you. Thanks, Jerry jerry.ashley28694@gmail.com
