So here's my predicament: We all know how cliche red wheels have become; they are so "Rockerific" it almost hurts. The thing is, I think I would like to run red wheels on my '54 Chevy. It's a dark grey metallic pretty stock. My father told me that my grandfather had a 54 Caddy that he had the wheels painted red on. He then ran Caddy caps on the wheels so that only about 1/2 an inch of red was showing before the whitewalls. I'm running the full size Bel Air covers, so I'd get the same effect. My grandfather was an undertaker and probably the farthest thing from Rockabilly you could get. So I'm thinking the hell with the stigma, I'm going red. What are your opinions? Thanks, Jay
I say ****'em do what ya like. If I wanna run red wheels on my car I don't give a **** who says what, red they are. JMHO Drew
What are your opinions? Thanks, Jay[/QUOTE] Red wheels have been around as long as hotrods and will never go away. Of course I'm bias.
My Ford wagon is a dark charcoal metallic grey with red steelies and it looks *****in. I'd run 'em, why not, after all it's your car and the only opinion that matters is yours.
When I got my 54 chevy it had been painted primer black a white roof and red wheels. Its a good look , thats why its so popular, Im going with a different color choice, but I do still like the red, do what you want, its your car.
I've got red wheels - but I always remeber other cars that have a different color that looks good. It is your car - do what you want
I think the slight bit of red that will show with full hubcaps looks good, but I agree to each his own
That's a damn good point - I think there might be one other car running red steelies and it looks *****in' - model A pickup - very clean Everybody else is running around in hot neon colored billet mobiles with chrome or aluminum wheels with Nokian tires - guess I don't have to worry about blending in too much with them. I just don't want REAL hot rodders looking at my car and saying, "Damn, what a poser." I know I really shouldn't care what other people think about MY car, but it's always nice to get complimented, not beat into the ground... Thanks folks.
Red wheels are not the problem when used in the right context. It will look awesome with the grey metallic. The problem is the flat black Chevy Caprice with red wheels, it does'nt fit the era and does not make for a traditional look. Wrong car for that look. There are other options but I would go for what you want and not worry what others think.
Yeah, I know I know, I felt the same way when ordering my tires. Everyone is runnin the round ones! Careful the red wheels might make yer *** look big! It's yer car so **** everyone who would give ya **** about it.
I ask you this... Who is more of a poser, the guy who runs red steelies cuz he likes them, or the guy who doesn't because he's afraid of what others think? Hot rods are about going fast and looking cool. If any given mod falls in either category, you're good to go!
I think this "you can't run red wheels because they're too rockabilly" thing is gay. Yes, they've been overdone on Rat Rods that are flat black and poorly engineered. On a green car w/ wide whites they'd be far out for sure. Do it man, do it!
Red wheels with full Bel Air 'caps ain't rockabilly. I ran '54 Bel Airs on all my '49 - '54 Chevies back in the early sixties, it's one of my favorite looks. If you want to make a good impression on the hot rodders in your 'hood, keep your car nice and don't act like a squirrel.
