Had a wreck in my daily today, so looking to hit this project hard and heavy this weekend to get it into a driver status. It currently has a v8/auto combo in it, not really sure which. Supposedly 289 not sure of trans. I have a complete engine, transmission, harness and computer out of a 90 Mustang 5.0. 5.0HO with AOD transmission. I think the engine mounts should be the same, I assume I will have to fab a trans crossmember and get a new driveshaft built.

Does anyone know how to modify the harness to work or have diagrams I can look at to figure this out? Anyone done a similar swap in a similar car? What am I looking forward to?

What's wrong with the engine that's in it?

Engine is easy, all the BS with high pressure fuel pumps, wiring, etc is a drag. Like Swifster said, what's wrong with the 289? Freshen it up and drive it.

if your dead set on swaping engines and transmisions check out mustangs plus , they should be able to outsource all the stuff needed to convert it , could get pricey though , do you have the computer out of the car the 5.0 was in ? unless your handy w a wiring diagram and able to shorten up the factory harness and eliminate sensors expect to spend $ 700 up for a wiring harness from ron morris or painless ! or you could be like me and use the 5.0 and ditch the efi and put your carb and intake on , the benefits of roller camshaft and aod will be nice if its gonna be a driver , just be sure to hook up the tv cable from the aod to the carb w a kit from lokar and get it adjusted propperly or youll burn up the tranny !

Years ago we purchased a '63 for our oldest son to drive to school, it had the small V8 and 2-sp auto. Except for the sport coupe, I think the biggest V8 was the 260. When he started college, it wasn't up to that trip. We swapped in a 302 and AOD trans. The motor mounts swap but the trans is on some stubs. I used some angles to lengthen the stubs and found a driveshaft to fit. We just swapped the carb and manifold. We found a water pump with the connecotions on the correct side to keep from getting a new radiator.
I think I still have some details if you are interested, let me know.

and yes you will have to buy or fab a crossmember plus install a return line to the gas tank and an inertia switch in case of an accident so it kills the fuel pump ! i would say realistically unless you can do most of the work yourself expect to spend around $ 1,200 for the harness and necesary parts

  7. The absolute best bet is this one with a carb. Cheap and easy.

KISS And yes the SBF should just about be a bolt in. You'll have to bolt the fairlane mounts to the late block.

Put the new 5.0 in. You have the harness and computer and can get the rest easily. Going to a carb would be like digging a hole in your backyard to make and use an outhouse because it was easy or quicker. The smooth instant performance of the newer EFI and modern trans would make it a great daily. Sorry guys, that's my opinion and I'm sticken to it.

  9. That's OK street rodders need an opinion too. Of course it would be better received on a more non traditional site.

Any time your ready bring your EFI and lets hook em up.

Easy to do.... done it many times. The 90 harness will work just fine. Use an external pump and run the return line back to your tank drain.

I can send you you a wiring diagram if you send me a pm with your e-mail.

The harness just needs power/ground and connection to your ignition switch. Need to add a relay for the fuel pump and the O2 sensors.

If your car has a 63 221/260 the motor mount will be one inch narrower. Buy some 65 mustang ones and you will be ok.

You'll have to swap the pan and pickup to a front sump pan as well....

Is there an easy way to tell what engine/transmission is in the car currently? I plan on the swap still though and will do all the work myself. Not scared of wiring or other stuff I have done plenty before with efi mustangs.

dont do it man. nothing looks worse under the hood of an old ford than a newer 5.0 efi intake plenum.

i put a 331 (stroked 302) in my falcon, original engine mounts will work, trans crossmember will need to be modified, you will need the slip yoke from your aod/t5 not sure which you have. i am using a radiator from a 65 mustang v8, no fancy aluminum radiator needed. your mustang exhuast headers may not fit, they wouldnt work in my falcon. i have tri y long tube headers that fit nicely with my stock shock towers.

It's a worthwhile swap, but it's not something you're gonna whip together in a couple weekends to make a daily driver. And if you need the daily driver fast, then lots of annoying little things will crop up to make it even more time consuming, because, you know, that's the way it always goes. Need it quick? Freshen up what you've got and drive it. Get something else and swap the EFI stuff in when you have time to work with it and iron out the lumps.

swap the fi intake for the carbed one, then you can collect the rest of the stuff for you efi conversion while you enjoy the car.

I dont recommend external pumps for efi, if you do use one might carry a spare.

to add an internal pump to the tank requires a ton of work. I've done a couple and if your interested I could look up the part# for off the shelf components that with little modification can be made to work.

The biggest issue is getting the proper high pressure lines made for the efi.

I was worried abotu bad injectors and snsors so i just put a edelbrock intake and carter carb on mine. And of course then you have to go with the lokar tv cable.. Just ordered mine today after trying to rig up the stock style to my carb.. said screw it just order it and be done...
