oK HAMBERs here is a new one for all the problem solvers..... Here is the scenerio : 1950 ford with a 1969 chevy 350 new starter... new painless wire kit ...new coil... new wires... new condensor... new plugs... mallory dual point dizzy. Ive got power to the coil and when i take the cap off the dizzy and touch the points i get a spark so we're good there but very weak spark or no spark at all. I've ran a jumper cable from my new fully charged battery to the + side of the coil and NADA! ive been at this for 3 days and im getting ready to just like this thing on fire... and watch it spark! Any ideas? Should i just get rid of the mallory dual point set up? Just like everyone else im trying to budget so that is the last route but in order to get this thing on the road before winter f it ill dish the money.....
I had similar problems a few years ago, eventually got rid of the mallory. Hoe ever what work for me was I put a piece of cardboard from a cigarette pack between one set of points, and away it went ran like this for a while then replaced with original type. I assume timing and everything is OK. another thing is just check you don't have a short wear the power wire connects to the distributor I have had this problem also, hope this helps.
have you checked point gap, point condition, and dwell? where/how are you testing for spark? is the distributor new, are the cap and rotor in good condition?
Had the same problem with a Mallary dual point dist in my Flathead. Took the points out and put a Pretronix set-up in it. Ran great than.
If the spark is orange colour [ not blue ] , throw another condensor at it. It isn't storing energy. I have bought faulty condensors before.
yes i have and NADA still! Should i just swap the damn thing out! its got a new cap but its a old dizzy
If the condensor is not up to snuff it will happen. If you want to understand that better. Take an old coil and a signal linght blinker and wire them together. Check the spark coming from the coil without a condensor in the circuit and then with. You will have a whole new understanding of how it works and what you need. Also they work much better and so do you if you call it a distributor and not a dizzy. Don
