I took the universal studio tour back in the summer of 78(maybe?)remember seeing it and columbo's car, i've got pics somewhere
I remember that movie, seen It once, thought it was cool at the time, reminds me of a another car film called Christean, It was 57 I think Chrysler that possessed a kid
The working name of the movie before release was "wheels"..... There were six Cars built for filming by Barris Kustoms in North Hollywood, California: one main car of steel and five fiberglass replicas. Three replicas were destroyed in the climactic explosion scene and the other two replicas were wrecked in rollovers. The gloss-black main Car is a custom Lincoln Mark III with a locked 4.11 differential (to allow easier spinning), a 460 cubic-inch V8 engine, heavy-duty suspension, roll bar, safety harness, and amber-tinted glass. The top is lowered and the beltline raised. Twelve craftsmen built the main Car in six weeks.
I would love a copy of The Car. I was 6 when it came out and it was one of my absolute favorite car movies. Anybody remember "The Wraith" from the 80's. Also a good one. The bad guys had some pretty nice motors in their hideout.
A few years ago the guy who claimed to be the current owner of the car from "The Wraith" came out to our shop to see if we were interested in producing some copies, he said he had collected many of the pieces to make new ones (including the body molds) but when we started asking questions about the rights to the car design or the use of the name he left never to be heard of again.
Check out the soft bound book "Barris TV & Movie Cars" by George & David Fetherston from Motorbooks International. There's a good article with in-progress, and behind the camera pics. The book has 36 vehicles, some I've never heard of. "The Silencers, Mag Wheels, or Pit Stop"?
Never even heard of this movie. Like a lot of things, it must have missed MD where I was growing up. But, wait, is that the driver's flaming body flying out of the tumbling police car at the 57 sec mark? Looks like it to me. http://www.youtube.com/v/TFWea3Eu97E
I remember that movie being a pretty big deal back when I was in grade school a long time ago. I think an updated, modern version, or re-make, would make a pretty good movie actually.
I always kinda' thought Chrysler designed their "300" after that car. It's a natural for the remake...
Hey Stu....it would be awesome if you could find your pics...if you do, please email them to me. lincolnmrk66@aol.com I have been archiving virtually everything to do with this car and movie for years. I hope to have a website up for it all soon. As of now, I only have 2 photos of The Car on the Universal lot. If anyone else has any rare pics or info about The Car, please let me know. Thanks! -Matt
