I seem to see an awful lot of green cars coming out. Now I'm even seeing them at the local drag strip. What gives? I love the color in most shades and variants but is it getting played out? If you have pics of outstanding green examples please share em, but I'm curious as to our membership's observations. I have a long term kustom project I'm in to that I'd planned to do in Kandy Organic Green but I'd hate to have "just another green kustom" vibe on it before it ever gets shared. I hope it doesn't turn in to the gratuitous "do what you want..." dozens of responses. I'm sincerely interested in your observations, plans and pics. Thanks in advance.

I have no idea why. There was a green car built by pinkees rod shop and since then ( around here anyway ) I have seen green on alot of cars. It won at the goodguys show, then the next year, there were a least a dozen more in the builder's choice section that had been painted almost the same color. As for me, I have wanted to do it green for awhile now. I am irish as hell, and this sort of fits me. The next one, however, will not be green. I am seeng it all over now.

Park it next to my red one and we can hire a Santa, Theres a lot of greens out there as far as shades, I think the big knock against green is that most greens do not look good with chrome. I think if you could do a candy green with a silver or gold base it would be killer. I only ever shot mine red for photographic reasons, red cars really can't take a bad picture. I would do a bright non metallic blue next time.

LOL...just because someone "famous" paints a car green...followers will always be followers...

My '40 Stude was painted Cadillac Lime Fire Mist in 1977...repainted the same color in 1980...(can't access my photobucket account from this computer) othewise I'd post a pic of my Stude

Green has never been a popular color (until recently)...seems like once the "skin" was broken on the color...everyone jumped in...

In 1989, I had a Mint Green Pearl mixed from a printing ink sample (oh man, there goes my secret) and painted my rad '57 with it (sorry, won't post pix of it here cus it's pastel and HAMBers don't like pastels)...again, years before the green craze struck...

There used to be an old saying; "Never paint a race car green"...but yet, British Racing Green is a great color...

I don't know why green is so popular right now...these are just my observations...

Candy Organic Green is a great color...

Just painted my 55 red and beige...I think the closest I'll ever get to green would be turquoise.

  7. nothing will EVER replace flatblack
i love a cool car done in a medium green metallic
and lighter shades of green (like the one posted) look great on 50's cars with alot of chrome

and a real dark green like a candy sprayed over black looks awesome on customs and others

im not into the army o.d. greens and some of the other inbetween greens

    just my 2 cents

I havent noticed more green cars around lately. There sure is a whole lot of flat black stuff still running around though... Ive always liked green alot. Mine was painted almost 14 years ago. My pops old 56 panel was British racing green back in the 70's. Guess its in the blood.

Sorry but will p*** up on that "Green" **** for now . Hey just like when American Graffiti came out and everyone painted their deuce's Yellow ! Just shows the mentality of some people . Monkey see , Monkey do !
Now everyone follow the guy that is driving his car off the hill !

Our '54 Ford Ranch Wagon is not the green it originaly left the factory with or the darker metallic green my wifes dad repainted it in the late 60's.

The plan from day one when we started this project in 2003 was to bring the car back and to paint it a nice solid non original and non matellic color of green.

Long term visual ideas of color often get mistaken as riding the current wave of popularity.

    I've always liked green cars.HRP

It isn't enough just to create a "traditional" car?..now we have to take into account what the latest trend is in colors?, just so we can be sure and not be accused of following a new trend, or the opposite, and be a copy cat. We are all influenced by something, admit it or not. Certain shades of green can look great, like damn near any color. The car itself dictates the color for me, not a current trend, or an old trend. To copy something/someone, is the greatest form of flattery. And now for the "gratuitous".."paint your car whatever color that pleases you"

Isnt Brown supposed to be the "It" color of the year? 80's Heartthrob, neon got played, because it was in poor taste. If the car looks good, who cares what the color is.

The car I am building is to be green. The build started many years back and I picked green about 6 years ago. At that time I chose it partially because I did not see a lot of cars that color.

What color isn't over done? I think that we can agree that there are enough resale reds and flat blacks out there. The burnt orange or coppers look good but trendy. Not going to go with the pinks and purples. Yellows are almost in the resale red catagory. So I was left with blue or green and the car was originally green and I did not currently have a green vehicle.

When I started to spray on the actual paint I was very tempted to go shiny black but I had already painted the firewall green. Next car will be black. Sure, now everybody and their uncle will have shiny black for their color. ;)

I think it is just another cycle in the endless circle of currently popular car colors. But if you look at photos of real cl***ic cars and restored cars and trucks or paint chip books for older models there were a lot of nice greens back in the day and it has always been popular.

To me nothing is more boring or shows a total lack of original thinking more than flat black. My truck has been in flat black primer many times in the past 37 years that I have owned it but I'd never drive it that way again just because you pull into any event including the Wednesday nite cruise at Peppermint Stick drive in and half the cars there are flat stinkin black.

I full and well understand that the lack of skill to get a body finished out properly for shiny paint is an issue with a lot of guys along with the continual rising cost of paint from automotive paint suppliers and that is the primary reason for the flat black paint.

  19. I always liked the 59' Ford April Green. Especially on a F100 of that time frame with two tone paint with white over April Green. I have always thought that there is no such thing as a bad color, just a bad color/car combo.

IMHO not every color will look good on a given car, it will always come down to personal taste.

I was at a gas station the other day, bright sunny day, and a guy pulled in with a 2011 Camaro. It was "synergy green" and boy is that a kustom kar kolor! I can see my shoebox with that and white pearl scallops. But I read it is a limited edition paint color so who knows what the materials would cost. However I think I'll ask.

I remember the 'green race car' thing. Went right along with peanuts and the number 13. There's a story with all of those fables, huh? Something else to love about this stuff. Yes, the color is a great one and can take on several looks depending on base, mat'l choices, etc.

Perhaps my statement there was in the wrong vernacular:cool:

I meant to address the same idea that gives us so many Roman Red Chevs, Plum Crazy Mopars and Packard Cream Packards.

Well, thank you very much. I knew someone had to say it:rolleyes:

How did you feel about that? Does it bother you some, even if just a little? No matter how you feel about it I'll bet you still love the color. I have a 41 Packard 160 cpe that no matter what the current trend is it's going to be "Grove Green Iridescent" which was an OEM offering. To pretty a color to p*** up.

I like this so far. Lots of opinions and ideas. Here's another hook that prompted me to ask this here. Mrs. Highlander has noticed the trend as well. She asked if I was sure I wanted to do that, but she's not as tuned in as most of us are. A professional finisher can see the different hues and shades, the character each color can develop depending on base or the use of other materials like lacquer vs urethane. I still love the color and I'm not against it just yet. The fact is it may be quite a while before it sees color but I always "see" the finished product as I go along. I can't see it in rootbeer or tangerine, the colors she liked but I didn't have the heart to tell her that:eek:

My coupe was green when I bought it, and even though it's kind of a gawd-awful color (I'd call it gas chamber green), I like it like that. The guy I bought it from had owned it for nearly 40 years, and it was his first car in high school. He'd had it painted in the early 70's, and seemed to remember it was some sort of Mopar green.

I decided to leave it that color. The darker colored areas are where I chopped the top and welded in repair panels. Rather than leave those areas gray primer, I mixed some Dupont Centauri Apple Green acrylic enamel that was laying around in with the primer. No match, for sure, but it's mostly all green.

Here's a before picture and a couple after ones.
