Acrylic Laquer

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 46international, Sep 5, 2010.

  1. I have some "new" panels to paint for my Cadillac, and I need some more Dupont Acrylic Laquer. About a year ago I got some from Auto paint pro, but it does not look like they sell the Dupont laquer #99s black anymore. Does anyone have any ideas where I can get a gallon or two?

I have received two quotes recently for acrylic lacquer. TCPGlobal quoted $375.00/gal for Washington Blue. And a independent supplier in Albuquerque quoted $475.00/gal. Looks like the EPA has just about shut down the lacquer business.

You were on the market for a factory orginal color but TCP has a Restoration shop color chart with plenty of nice colors and you can 3 gallons of paint and 3 gallons of thinner for the same price as that Washington Blue.;)

  9. Thanks for the "tcp" tip, I just sent them an e-mail asking if their paint will match the Dupont 99S.
Wayne, what do you mean the tcp is already reduced? Does this mean it is already cut with lacquer thinner? I never heard of such a thing. I guess it's just like buying antifreeze that is already cut with water.

  10. Ratrodnut, about a year ago I did the same thing but the company I got it from does not list it any more.

Lacquer will be around for as long as fine furniture and musical instruments are being produced. That's the biggest industry use for it. PPG's clear formula has not changed in over 30yrs. PPG black is a tad bit "browner" than DuPont 99s. The 99 looks a bit "blue" by comparison. MI suppliers still handle some lacquers too. Painter's Supply and Equipment is our biggest distributor. Good luck gettin it. Nothing has the depth and clarity of well done lacquer.

  15. Just picked up two gal. of Acrylic Laquer form Matto's in Beltsville Md. they have stores in Pa., Va. and Maryland and sounds like they can order just about any Dupont colors made. Don't know about custom mixing. Just look them up on the internet. They will not ship, so you must pick it up. $220 per gal.

Really? I bought a couple quarts from them last year and it wasn't thinned (I'm old school, laquer is thinned, enamals are reduced!). It was TCP's "house brand" I used to match a 53 Pontiac, I was pleased with it and much cheaper the our local supplier.

yes you are correct ( thinned )when i purchased my lac from them it sold as a kit i gal of paint i gal of thinner . i questioned them on that because i always thinned 150-175 percent and they said it was already thinned a bit so a gal would be enough

32V, that might be right. It had been years since I shot lacquers when I did this Pontiac but I seemed to remember we use to mix color 1 to 1 and lacquer clear 1 to 1 1/2 (150%) so that's how I mixed it. It shot right so I thought I'd remembered right!
