Doing the final chores before first start-up of a fresh engine, I'm hooking up a timing light and dwell/tach so can I can keep track of things from the start. I haven't used my sears advance timing light for years and my memory ain't up to the challenge. I want about 12-15 degrees initial timing so on the dial-back light can I set the dial on the desired setting, say 14 degrees, and once the engine is running turn the distributor one way or the other to bring the flash to the zero mark?

Yep, that's it. beats squinting to try and read those numbers way down there at times. Which reminds me I need to dig the timing light out and set the timing on the daily today.

Thanks for the helpful responses, I hadn't used the light since I sold a very o/t car 7-8 years ago. I seemed to remember doing it the way I described because the "0" mark was so much easier for old tired eyes can see.
