i was at a signal light tonight - had a couple of kids in the rumble seat - a guy pulled up along side my A & said California just p***ed a law making it illegal to ride in a rumbel seat? - don't see the difference between riding in a convertible or on the back seat of a motorcycle - i installed seat belts for the rumbel seat - i don't think the guy knew what he was talking about but he didn't look like a nut case. Guess i'll try to look it up on google - tom http://www.picturetrail.com/tomhudson
never heard of that one and i try to keep up on BS laws like that.. especially since cali is known for dumb stuff like that.. we do runs and plenty of people are riding in a rumble seat and there were plenty of cops there giving tickets if they "thought" you spun a tire.. so this being said they didnt get any tickets for riding in the rumble seat that i heard of!! keep doing it and make the cop give you the code dont let them get away with the unsafe operation ticket that they try to blanket us all under.. not a cop hater just a cali dumb law hater
anyone checked with SEMA to see if it's true?they keep up really good with any BS laws like this even if they are just trying to get to get p***ed
I have a hard time believing they would p*** a law that would effect a few dozen cars. Even if we are talking about California. I call ********
is'nt most laws . This was'nt near san fran was it ? Just ask the cops or your local rep.keep the faith.
That guy's fullo****. There's no law forbidding rumble ridin'. Where else you gonna put yer Mother in law?
A Google search for Rumble seat law, California only brings up this thread when searching through the first ten pages. Probably some bonehead trying to show that he knows something you don't. I don't think trying to p*** any law like that would get far once the cl***ic car boys (real ones not the my car is 25 years old and now a cl***ic) nor the Model A club would let that get far without giving their reps an ear full. But nonsense has worked it's way though the state law makers before and Cal seems to be the leader in that department.
I call ********/jealousy. The guy sees you out having a nice cruise with your kids in the family Hot Rod and because he's jealous lays a line of ******** on you. He might as well have told you that your car was leaking gas. California legislators are busy increasing sales tax and p***ing bills such as no cell phone use while driving which bring in revenue. A rumble seat law isn't really going to generate enough revenue to warrant all the work to put the law into effect. Maybe 1 out of every 10,000 vehicles has a rumble seat, gets drriven relatively few miles and of those only occasionally the rumble has p***engers.
His other car's a Prius and his car before that was an EV and before that a blue Volvo wagon and before that, a Pacer... (he had the Volvo for a long time and it blew smoke bluer that the car....) Sounds like he doesn't like old cars but wants to be nice about it.
wouldnt matter if the car is liscensed as a vintage anways.. it would be excluded/grandfathered out of that law anyways...
...good to see clowns like this making you aware of a bogus law ...glad there were not any fenderless Coupes or roadsters around so he could warn the owners that fenders are now required....
There is no way this is a law,and actually as long as the seat where ever it it placed on or in a vehicle is securely bolted down and has seat belts it is legal. I was told this by a chp officer who had stopped us for having someone in the bed of a truck.
This is true, but even more relevant is this- CVC 27315 f) Every owner of a motor vehicle, including every owner or operator of a taxicab, as defined in Section 27908, or a limousine for hire, operated on a highway shall maintain safety belts in good working order for the use of occupants of the vehicle. The safety belts shall conform to motor vehicle safety standards established by the United States Department of Transportation. This subdivision does not, however, require installation or maintenance of safety belts where not required by the laws of the United States applicable to the vehicle at the time of its initial sale. Simply put, you don't even have to install seat belts if the vehicle didn't come from the factory with them. So, there's no way they can make riding in a rumble seat illegal, since seat belts aren't even required for anything old enough to have had a rumble seat. If you aren't required to wear a seat belt, how can it possibly matter where you sit?
I have no doubt a cop could write you up for something if he felt like it. He'd be a real charmer to do it, though. I've had nothing but good experiences with los angeles cops where my '51 is concerned, they've cut me a lot of slack when I've used some poor judgement LOL In my late models? not so much.
As screwy as Calif lawmakers are, I seriously doubt they ever think about rumble seats. It's true they do like Nanny laws. And they are much better at deciding whats good for you and me than we are. But they are just to busy with plastic bags and Happy Meals to even know rumble seats exist.
How about helmets for roadsters? I heard some buzz about that from Calif. DMV-mgr sister-in-law a coupla years ago. Wouldn't surprise me...
Believe same reasoning as riding in pickup bed. It's nothing more than a revenue stop. They bank on the fact that you won't show in court. Smoked License plate covers, single plates, questionable tint and even "Offensive" bumper stickers are just a few of them. At least in Cali.
so who defines offensive bumpersickers? I'm doubting that one...that's got to be baloney. I just went through the seat belt codes for California and there nothing I could find about rumble seats. So...I doubt it this is factual.
Tell him to produce a shield and write a ticket, when he can't tell him that impersonating a law enforcement officer is illegal as well. The guy was a ****er.
here's the link to the "S" page of the California vehicle code... scroll down to "seat belt" and see if you can find anything pertaining to rumble seats. I did, and I can't. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vc/vc_index_s.htm I don't know why a guy at a traffic light shooting his mouth off should trigger so much hand-wringing? It's either legal or illegal. Until someone can find a code that says it's illegal, then I have to think it's legal. Even here in SoCal, I don't think I see anyone in a rumble seat more than once a year. I doubt this is considered "high-priority" enough to make a law over it. In legal terms, it would be considered no different that a rider in the backseat of a pre-1950's car. One has a roof, one doesn't...like a phaeton. So, either come up with a real link to a real code, or go enjoy your Sunday...........
Ha; The last time I wondered about obscure traffic rules was when I was studying for my drivin' test. From then on I just watched the signs along the road. IF I had a rod with a rumble seat; Wouldn't ride a kid back there except in a parade, around the block or something like that, but not out in traffic. I wouldn't approve of, or if asked, give permission to, a kid or grandkid of mine under age 18 to ride in somebody else's ******* car or rumble seat out in traffic. Those kinds of relatively hazardous activities are adult decisions. Nobody is ever going to be allowed to ride in back of my truck, whatever his age. I wouldn't ride in a rumble seat myself because I'd be drivin'.
