I'am building a 27 roadster I'am going to install a 40 front axle and need to know what kind of rearend to get from the bone yard so the front and rear wheels line up. thanks Bill
www.carnut.org has a nice list showing rear end widths. It's listed under the car specs tab on the main page. Shows a good range of years and different manufacturers. A rear end from a 75 or 76 Maverick, Granada, or Comet would be fine. They are 8" rear ends. I set my 29 Es*** up with a 40 Ford straight axle and used an 8" rear end from a 76 Comet.
Another thing..If you want to use a certain wheel look, make sure the rear axle has a bolt pattern that will work with the wheel look you want. For example; if you want the 40-48 steelies, it might be worth looking for the same 5.5 pattern rear. I think a hamb thread said a very early Bronco has a narrow 9" rear with 5.5 You can redrill other rear axles to fit, but many axle flanges are too small to use the 5.5 pattern.
Actually, if you do settle on a narrow 8" rear and it seems too narrow, Wheelsmith sells billet wheel adaptors from 5-on-4.5" to 5-on-5.5". I have some, and they are excellent for use on a roadster or very lightweight coupe. (they come in 1" thickness and 1.25", the thicker one necessary for V8 wires or Kelsey-Hayes bent spokes) Not the old cast type, but solid billet. Don't worry, when painted black they don't show to be 'billet'!
That's EARLY Bronco-not the one based on either the F-100 or the Ranger. And trying to find one might be a bit tricky.
