OK...I'm trying to line up parts for my upcoming project. My goal is to make a clean and straight 40 or 41 plymouth bus. coupe that appears bone stock on interior AND the black exterior, including molding and ride height. The only compromise on the exterior that I am willing to make is with the tires and wheels. No..not chromes, mags or the like, rather steel wheels, painted, with small hub caps, and probably 7's on the front and 9's on the rear. Square profile, treaded, (50's looking slicks), for lack of a better description. To increase the drivability and versatility of the car, being as I want to drive it A LOT, I would like to install a small ci sb chevy and a 6 speed manual transmission, followed by probably a 3.73 rear, but I still need to do some calculations. MY QUESTION is: Has anyone tried putting a 95 Camaro clip under the front of a 40/41 Plymouth coupe? I have located the Camaro locally, and it has everything I want: newer suspension, power brakes, power steering, engine mounts for the sb chevy, and a good 6 speed transmission. Is this too good to be true or not. I am wondering about alignment of ch***is clip to the Plymouth and resulting ride height. Of course I have a zillion more questions from there. I have never done a front clip before and respect the complexities, but am excited to give it a go if it's a worthwhile effort. So, has anyone tried it??? Jason
A 95 Camaro is a uni-body car, can't use the front clip. 40's era Mopar's have a decent front suspension, there are dropped spindles and disc brakes kits out there for them. Personally I'd find a mopar engine for the car.
If it was a 75 camaro I'd say go for it....95's used a unibody with strut front suspension. Not usable in anything but a 95 camaro.
Holy crow. What a putts I am! Rocky, I hadn't even thought of the fact that the Camaro has strut suspension. If I can get the Camaro cheap enough, I may still do it for the transmission, power brakes stuff and power steering stuff. Any suggestions or humbling answers with this thought? Jason
my father did a 1969 camaro clip under his 40 plymouth, worked out killer,,,pre 69 nova, camaro clips have the box behind the crossmember,70 and up in front of,,as a matter of fact the camaro clip slid right into the factory plymouth rails, and everything is availiable for a camaro clip, brakes, arms etc.,,
I would say no to the front end. Even if you could mount everything (it has been done) it's a bit wide for that car and the positive offset wheels you would need to run would ruin the look. When you are picking a front suspension to use, make damn sure the track width is within an inch or so of what you have now or you will never be happy with tire clearance.
Yeah it is. A volare would make more sense. However what is wrong with the 41 ply front end? A bit to much travel perhaps which is easy to cure and maybe the old style shocks are beat now. Both small problems easily cured. If it is disc brakes of even bendix style drum rakes you want that is easily dealt with. Don
FYI, 93 and later Camaros and Firebirds did NOT use a strut suspension like the '82-92 cars. They had unequal length a-arms. However, you'd still have to cut off the frame rails in front of where they attach to the body in order to get anything usable out of them.
