I notice that the OP has not been back to either giggle or post a protracted explanation. Perhaps he thinks he has punk'd the HAMB. If so...he is quite easily entertained by himself.

It wasn't wallpaper, but adhesive backed vinyl shelf paper that was used on small panels and dash boards. CalCustom tried packaging this stuff but it never took off. I actually used some stuff with a mottled silver pattern on a rear quarter panel (both sides) to cover some primer spots. Looked ok on a gray paint job and lasted a couple of years. It's not unlike the wood grain vinyl they're still selling today for dash boards. OP has it right to a point.

I saw a pic of a race car in Speedy Bills museum recently that was done in a plad design in the 50`s. Could of been wallpaper. But was probaly painted on. By the way--welcome to the Hamb. Saw an El Camino once-from the belt line up, was covered in heavyduty vinyl. Solid color though- no pattern to it.

I have a roll of some kind of gold colored embossed stuff for 'dressing up' your car.

Just couldn't find a space helmet to wear when cruising...

  13. I remember guys putting on "wet slide" trim panels (I think they looked more medieval european myself) by basically rolling them up, soaking them in a pan, and applying them with paddles/squeegy..., kind of reminds you of how paper hangers do it in the interior decorating industry.
    .
But then again, who's memory from the "early 70's" in L.A., or anywhere "Hip man" is spot on?

On a side note, most of my mexican friend's houses back then had painted walls...couldn't afford wallpaper :(

Nope- don't remember wallpaper but I do remember the vinyl tops in flower patterns. I even remember one in denim.

I do remember gold leaf was popular on some cars & usually used for lettering.
Then there was the ever popular prism paper. Available in many colors too. ;)

would't have any idea about what happened in LA, but in New Zealand there was a 1972-3 datsun rally car that had wallpaper on it, was on tv ads, it lasted for a long time, I think.

We used shelf paper(wood pattern) from the Coronet store to replace the phoney wood sides on station wagons before we sold them.

    Dont know if that counts?
