So, I have a car that I need to get on a trailer. There is no key, and the wiring behind the dash is fried. I need to get it started. I have a ballast resistor that I wired between the coil (negative side) and the positive side of the battery. I have a remote starter to turn it over. The coil ohms out fine, so it shouldn't be the issue. It cranks over and over, but it doesn't try to fire. Do I need to do something different with wiring, or should I try chasing down other issues?
Assuming you know that it does run, can't you hook up a universal keyed ignition switch? Are you getting spark at the plugs?
positive side of the coil to positive on battery, negative side of the coil should go to the distributor also depending on the year, not all cars like ballast resisitors, i'd run a straight lead from positive of battery to positive of coil if just trying to get on a trailer, foregt the resistor
I go along with what he said. You don't need a resistor in the system to run for a couple of minutes to get it on the trailer. For longer periods yes it should be there if it is required on the rig.
Well, I'm retarded. I made a newb mistake and had the coil wired backwards. After fixing that, it started up. Other than the nasty old gas, it ran pretty good. It's now in my shop, and I have already started working on it. Thanks for all of the responses. Viva la HAMB.
Don't run it on the old nasty gas anymore. That shit will form shellac/gum on the valve stems and stick 'em solid. Followed by bad things happening,bent push rods valves etc.
Yeah, I already drained all the gas, but thanks for the advice. It was like honey almost coming out of the tank, nasty.

Do most factory original car gas tanks have draining provisions in them? Can't find a drain for '69/70 Pontiac Catalina (with 400 engine). Do I have to take the tank out to drain it? Lots of work to do that.
Exactly. A lot of points cars had a hot lead from the solenoid that gave it twelve volts at start up. if its a points car you can actually bypass the resistor all together all that will happen if you run it that way for an extended period is that it will burn the points. Also if you condensor is shot it won't start.
