So this is my bit of hot rod heaven, Bought the car without a motor as you see it in the first pics, after getting it home I immediately unhooked the leaf in the front to get an idea of stance. Then came the tear down process, I opted for a bagged mustang II style front end. I will be running a 69' 460 c6 package out of a mark III. pics of the dash are as it sits now. I need to machine the trim for the aux gauges and make my plate for the ac controls. Its coming along well, I just pulled the body to cut and weld in my wide x member kit to accommodate the c6. The front end is finish welded and ready for assembly. Love any input guys
pics of me behind the 48 my dad built in the early 80's amazing car built when these cars wern't that popular to hotrod
Car is coming along good-looks great-These cars are great road cars. If you want to save some grief later-get rid of the factory rear crossmember(the dropped one the front of your gas tank is bolted to) and replace it with a piece of straight channel. You will have more room for your exhaust and rear sway bar. Keep up the good work-Dash looks real purdy!
thanks for the kind words! I do plan on replacing the rear cross member as I will be running a behind the rear bag setup. I also have choose to get rid of the steel tank for a lighter and slightly bigger composite unit. Any feedback ion the ladder bar setup? I have the Pete and Jakes kit but the more I think about it I am leaning towards a tri 4 bar setup……… any constructive feedback either way is greatly appreciated!
also looking for a pair of seat frames for this car, if anyone has any or knows of someone who does let me know.
I've never run a four bar on a fat car. I run Posie's leaf kit set to the lowest setting and no blocks. A 29 inch tall tire on an 8 inch rim with a 58 inch wide axle is all I could fit in the stock fenders and are a son of a gun to get off. The car will hook up with leafs okay because the weight is about equal front to back. It's simple and easy to install
angel, i like the way that car sits, I'm planning on running the rear end back about 3/8". To me these cars look like the rear tire is forward in the stock location. I just finished welding on the widened x, i will post pics shortly. thanks for your advice!
You're doing the right thing on that centre section-wide enough for the trans to set in there and you've left yourself enough room to run exhaust to the back and have the brake pedal under the floor if you want to. Sometimes when people build these cars they can pay too much attention to the tape measure and not enough attention to the right look. Just because Henry built the car with a 114 inch wheelbase at the factory in '48 doesn't mean it will look right with a 114 inch wheelbase after it has been lowered a foot. My wheelbase grew by close to an inch and a half overall. Starting to take shape-looks good!
thanks, Your right, these cars really do not look right after you lower them, the front tires look pulled back, and the rear's pushed forward.
ok, time to post some pics. I decided to move the car to my shop for the final leg. mock up on the 460 went well, tranny and motor are mounted. rear end is sorted. ladder bar air ride sorted out. panhard mounted. body work has begun. more pics to come.
back to the car, needed to work out the dent in the door and on the front cowl of the car, now for the rest of the sheet metal work and we are ready for some epoxy. back to the chassis for a minute. the motor and header combination choosen required me to " open " the frame up a little on the right side. most current pics of are the boxing procedures. its all coming together. next pictures of the fresh 429 that is replacing the 460.
To cool! Where at in CO? Will this car be at teh goodguy's show in june by chance? I would like to see it in person.
i have a firm goal of august so i can take it out to reno for hot august nights, then stop by the flats on the way home. my shop is north by longmont. if you are headed up my way let me know.
