  3. Man, you even took pictures of the Mold-A-Rama. Even I didn't take a pic of that. I looked it over pretty good though.

    Detroit.....the Motor City for sure.
Don't forget Henrys home Fairlane just next door to the museum.

Like Motown music? Hitsville, U.S.A. Museum.

Do a little internet research and lookup the original factory building where the Model T's were built (and the Model A was designed)...then over to Highland Park where the Model A's began. Visit Henry's final resting place. A very interesting grave site.
Then all of the old plants, abandoned and rotting. Name the brand and you'll probably find a building where they were made....a long, long time back.
Downtown to the former GM headquarters....what a building.
A short hop (1 hour or so) to Flint, see the Durant-Dort (Durant started GM) first office and around the corner the Charles Nash home where he was GM.
Could spend endless days touring the former glory days and the beginnings of the auto world in America.

  7. Thanks for the info...:)

You might check to make sure the museum is completely opened back up. I tried to go earlier this month and the automotive section (about a third of the museum) was under renovation. We ended up going to the Chrysler museum on our trip and will try to do the Henry Ford museum next trip.

Your gona love it. If your into antiques, go for the 32 and under show in September. Unlike most shows, where they sit around an look pretty, The Henry Ford has them drive around the village and you see actual traffic jambs, with every thing you can imagine. LOL. Loved it for the 11th time. Iceman

The Dearborn Inn was built to service the airport that was where the current Ford Test Track is. I'd stay there is you want to immerse yourself in all of the Ford history, plus it is near the museum.

an excellent choice. If you are there on a Sunday morning you MUST treat your wife to brunch in the fancy dining room. The best brunch I've ever had, seriously.

If you're up to meeting for dinner or cruzn or whatever let me know. I'm about 10 miles away.

Actually its off Evergreen, between Michigan Ave and Ford Rd, not next door, about a mile away. Beautiful building and grounds, I've gone to a few weddings and receptions there.

Isn't it off Evergreen not Greenfield? Basically across Michigan Ave. from The Village.

We went about 25 years ago, I highly recommend it...................bottle with Thomas Edison's last breath.......... I have to say is a little creepy there Henry.

  15. I want to see that bottle...I always wondered if there was another bottle with his last "Fart".....LOL

  16. Sure glad to see this thread revived. My visit there ranks right at the top of anyplace I've seen, and remains a "must see" for anybody into American history, culture, industy, cars, etc. Also wanted to repost what I'd been told by a Docent (leading tours) at Fairlane about them closing for a while.

This museum encomp***es everything that made this country so great. Where we made things that had never been made and did things that had never been done. And this is where it’s all on display.
Later in the week we did the Rouge Plant tour which was also fantastic, even though you can only tour the final ***embly section of the F-150 plant.

Then we toured ‘Fairlane’, Henry’s little house on the river bank of the Rouge. Very nice little place. Too bad the power plant area was closed for HVAC repairs. This attraction will be closed in December 2010 for up to 4 years, so if you want to go do it soon. I was told it’s changing hands, back from the U of Mich to the Ford Foundation and it needs some renovation work done after nearly 100 years.

  18. ....we are mainly going for the village as I have been to the museum a couple of years ago when attending the Autorama. Lots of good trip tips coming in ....the HAMB is great that way. Thanks

When touring the village, try and talk to the guides as much as possible. All the ones we talked with were a WEALTH of information, most of which isn't in the booklets and signage around the village. The old machine shop and Edison's shop are awesome. Also great food at the Eagle Tavern.

"If you're cool today...thank a coal fired power plant".

Check their web site. The car exhibit is closed until some time next year. Some of the cars are just s***ting in the aisles roped off down by the trains. There are a few others that have been placed in other areas. There is lots of work going on. I I was just there weekend of the fourth. I was very surprised I did not know they were making changes. If you go to the village take time to watch a 1860's baseball game if they are playing.
