Here's the deal. I’ve been to Paso a lot and I dig it a lot. I have a hotel room in Paso for about $170 per night with a 3 night minimum ($510+tax). Am I the only one on the planet that thinks it’s crazy to spend over $500 for a roadside motel in Paso? I looked into hotel rooms in Vegas for the VLV weekend and I found rooms on the strip for $150 in the major casino (on the strip) and less than $100 off the strip (travel Lodge, HoJo’s, Hilton, Motel6). Any one of these places would be nicer than the typical dives in Paso… PLUS IT’S VEGAS. It’s not the money... really…. it’s something else that’s making me re-think Paso.

I’ve never been to VLV. Should I go there instead and at least enjoy Vegas for the weekend?

I could still drive up to Paso for the day on Saturday… done that many times.

Just needed to get this off my chest I guess. Feel free to add your thoughts.

if you've never done VLV...I'd say go to viva.

and yes...paying that much for a room in paso is highway robbery. If I make it down I'll probably stay a ways away in Los Osos for free....or find something down the road a ways that's not so expensive.

Do you belong to AAA? If so some places give discounts to members. That does sound alot for just 3 days especially for a roadside motel. Now I can see spending that much for a 3or4 star hotel but not that. later shawn

  5. Yes, it's TOO much money. BUT, it's once a year, and a TON of entertainment. My dive is across from the bowling alley and it's $210 a nite with a 3 day minimum! And i keep going back. Sometimes i split it with 3 others, then it's only a hair over $50 a nite ($175ish for the 3 days each person), a bargain for the fun.

Thanks for the Roundup vote Dusty. We actually try to be a cross between VLV and Paso, leaning towards Paso.

I've been to both, like a lot of people. VLV is more fun than should be allowed. IF you like rockabilly bands and all of the non car show stuff that VLV has to offer. It's Vegas after all! The cars show is really cool, the bands are good, and playing ****s with guys you only get to see once a year is a blast. Lots of low buck, serious at***ude rides and swell folks for drinkin' beers with. BUT....

But Paso is the deal. I've only been once and it is the Holy Grail of outdoor car shows. You get to see the best of the best from the best builders and the coolest of the cool cars on the scene. If you live close and go every year, you probably don't realize how good you have it.

We (Kontinentals) can only hope to put on a show that draws the cars to hold a candle to Paso. And we hope to put on a party to stand in the shadow of VLV. I'm glad we have the combo of both, but we can't compete with the strengths of either.

I guess if you've been to Paso a bunch, you should go experience Vegas. The Shifters and Tom Engram do a great job. But in my book, Paso is the ultimate.

i've been top VLV 4 yrs in a row. my wife was a vendor up in the ball room.

i'm not into that rockasilly look. i just go to help my wife out and check out the cars. i didn't really like the vibe i got from the new crowd of people coming to the car show this year 2004. VLV is being advertised all over the place now. i can just imagine the mixed crowd this year is going to bring.

my wife and i will not be attending this year. we're going to the ROUND UP instead. :D

I hear what you’re all saying and truth is I’ll probably end up going to Paso anyway.

Lownslow / Lowsprings: I understand that VLV is more of a Pompa-Cuff-A-Billy event. Not my look per say, but I can respect the “scene”. I guess I’d be more interested in the VLV car show and then do my own thing in Vegas after that.

Holdfast: Stayed down the road in San Luis Obispo (27 miles south and still paid $110/ night) and the drive was a ***** especially after spending a day in the park drinking beer.

Plmczy: No AAA discounts in Paso… well maybe they’ll give you 10% off after the room cost has been jacked up 500%. Besides, motels in Paso are about 1 star on under anybody’s rating system.

Buzzard: Like I said up top. I’ll probably be there anyway.

I guess it’s just been a long **** *** day at work and I had to vent a little. See you in Paso!

I've never done either, but when it comes to Vegas, there are so many Hotels on and off the strip it's not bad to find a deal. I'm going this year, so it should be a blast. I'll probably be up all night anyway, so me and a few buds are probably just going to get like a Motel 8, don't really give a ****.

500 bucks for a hotel in Paso? Yeah, that's pretty insane. Of course, NO ONE rents a room other then when the shows are, so i'm sure they try and cash in as hard as they can. Get around that? Hit the camp grounds.

  15. Paso rules all, at least from what I have seen :)..

Vegas is a huge fashion show, but its fun cause its Vegas, ingnore the B.S. and have a good time because Axle does a great job. My wife and I are going to get away, its are one vacation with no kids, we can actually sleep in and not wake up to the kids screaming.. yeah..... Funny thing is I have been to 5 of these and I have yet to meet a fellow Hamber..ha,ha

My feeling as well, but if that is not in the cards, then Paso would be it. I feel it is the best show around. However I have not been to the Roundup. I am however trying to make that this year, so we'll see.
As someone said, try Atascadero for a hotel, or one of the other outlying towns. A short drive and you can save some dough. West Coast Kustoms has a hotel listing on their flyer and I think their website as well.

Hey, Dirty2, I'll be there, you bringing that Wagon ?

I'm going to my first VLV this year. I have sort of lowered expectations because of the dress up kids who will be rude to the old folks coming to see the old time rock and roll. But there are bands I like and I'll be there. I went to the Shifter's pre-VLV party last year and I know the car show will be fun. I wish my '49 was ready, that'd be a neat place to debut it. But I'm going anyhoot.

But I answered Buzzard here about the Roundup. I liked the pix from last time, there were some nice rides there. And Austin should bottle their damn water because there are more great musicians there than any place on the planet. I imagine it's hard to book bands because of the vast variety. I might fly in is you book the Asylum Street Spankers, Slaid Cleaves or Sarah Elizabeth Campbell.

My opinion they are both great just different atmosphere...if you like to drive go to Paso for the day like you said and go to VLV for the weekend. Another tip try some hotels in Henderson, NV its a few min drive but hotels are less expensive than the strip.
