I recently bought a 392 block and discovered that the back lower left corner (as looking from rear) is broken off. I have attached a picture for you all to look at. My question is do you all think that this block is still usable? This is my first Hemi rebuild so I want to make sure everything is good, and where else to go to ask for advice than here. I know I should have noticed it before I bought it, but just overlooked it. Thanks Steve
Well at least the dowel pin is still there!! I would think that since there is some real estate left there - you could always redrill it for a fastener in another location. Odds are you're gonna use an aftermarket trans adapter that will have space available as well. Deburr all the rough stuff (remove stress risers) and redrill say 3/4 or 1" higher and call it good. I've seen worse saved. I suppose another method would be to find someone VERY VERY skilled in iron welding and have them repair it to factory specs.
i would personally have it welded back up, with a powder torch,do it all the time, and guarrantee it forever.its about the easiest break to repair. search your area machine shops for someone that does this or crack repair. do not let any hillbillys tell you they can do it with a mig or some missle rod, etc..
^^ This guy's right ^^ I had the motor mount ears broken off of the block on the engine in my avatar after a crash. I found a professional welder who fixed it fine. This was about 10 years ago and no problems since.
