See Any Problems With This '31 Sedan Hot Rod Frame?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Arrowood Rod & Kustom, Oct 1, 2010.

  1. Do you see anything wrong with this frame for a '31 model a sedan hot rod? anything you'd change or that needs fixed/finished? other than the parts just being tac welded

    thanks

Front crossmember looks a little weak, steering box mount looks like it would have a lot of flex, wood blocks don't make very good spacers.

That front crossmember isn't going to hold up for long the way it is installed. At least from here it appears that normal driving would twist that small tube and with it **** welded to the end of the rails it might tear it out of the rails.
Other than that, aside from not being the most attractive design for a frame it is probably strong enough with the exception of out front.

  4. good to see I was thinking along the same lines as you guys, my buddy is looking at buying the '31 sedan hot rod project and I told him what I thought but he said I should throw it up on the HAMB and get others opinions as well so here we are

it looks well laid out and made, but the scrub line looks no good. is it at ride hight

  6. Buy it for the solid body, cut that frame up for the s**** bin and start over. It's overkill in the wrong places, and poorly engineered/executed in the areas that matter. It's alot cleaner that alot of the "rat rods' out there, but just not up to par structurally. It's only a couple hundred bucks for the steel to build a new frame and do it right.

X2. You could aways make something useful later from that square tubeing so not a total loss on the frame.

The motor mounts look interesting....as they sway fore and aft!
    Ditto on the front crossmember.

The front crossmember looks weak ,the back ,and the motor mounts ,Thats only judging by pictures ,I cant rell if mounts are 3/8 plate and front crossmember is it 3/16 ,I dont like the hangers on top .If they were fasttened to the crossmembers would be better ,I m thinking pendulum motion and will twist back and forth.

  15. The motor and steering mounts need gussets. I don't like so many spacers on the rear spring. How do you plan to mount the brake/clutch ***embly?

It looks like the frame was built by two different people. The front half is Mickey Mouse, the back looks like a bridge builder did the work

  17. I just threw up a little in my mouth! That is one of the worst ch***is I have ever seen in ALL respects, nothing on that should EVER see road use. Hell I wouldn't trust it for shelving!
TMAN's right, unless its dirt cheap for a body don't buy it!

Is it made of 2x3 tubing? If so, I'd s**** it and either find an original frame to use as a starting point, or, use 2x4 to build a tapered frame.

Those motor mounts will fail.... if the motor moves forward they'll just fold up!

  20. I see you're running the crosslink in front of the axle, when you do that you need to bend the steering arms to the correct angle.

  21. No, he asked about the problems and the whole thing is a freakin rat rod abortion of a problem! And that is offensive to abortion doctors even!:D

Kind of busy. There's almost enough steel to make two frames. Get a chopsaw, cut it up, don't keep any history, get a plan like maybe out of Tex Smith's book and start from scratch.

If the price is right, that looks like a decent pile of useable iron. But not much in the way of a useable frame.

    Good plan.

All I could see was a goose neck trailer. Just take the body off and weld a ball right above where the rear end is. :D:D

    Yep, I use to farm!!

On a serious note... If the body is decent, you would have the front end and rear end, just fab a better frame.

There would be enough there; body, tubing, drivetrain, and such to start re-thinking and building, but a change of direction would be needed.
