I'm new to the whole hotrodding thing. I have a 70 beetle- that I am going the volksrod route with. I know that they seem to catch some flak around here, but the goal with mine is to at least not end up some ball-o-billet tackiness.
Its more for fun then anything else. I would like to get my hands on something else though, something I can stuff a V8 into/comes with one. I'll have to look around the for sale area after I deploy I've seen it done, the original beetle based volksrod (stink bug) was done by a 32 Ford owner I believe. I like them just because I started out my journey as a car person with 4 bangers, the VW ones can be made to run fast (1500 pound rod with a 220whp engine will haul ass) and because they dont cost a lot. Money is tight, my welding skills are basic, so I figured I would start basic.

Welcome from Des Moines,Iowa! you said you are deploying? I HAVE a VW motor in my Little Car.started out a 1600, Its been bumped up to a 1915.she will cruise 80 all day long..
Welome fellow Volksrodder and Hot rodder. Yea I am straddling the fence also. I made my intro today. I built and drive a 32 5w, and I am building a Volksrod roadster pickup. Are you familiar with the website volksrods.com ? If not try it, you will like it. Hot rodders must understand a volksrod is the new Model A. A few of us have figured out how to unbolt the fenders, extend the front end, add wide whitewalls and incorperate traditional American hot rod ideas on a VW. After all how many types of old cars are left around that have the potential to modify as an old bug? Not many. It takes the same talent to make my Volksrod roadster pickup, as it did for me to chop the 50 Merc I did. It didnt make any difference where the steel was made.
Welcome aboard from Australia. . What you said in your reply is the way I also think. It's all about startin' somewhere and most importantly ...HAVIN' FUN.
