    Hello all,

Believe me with all the comments about Chinese made parts I questioned weather I should post this. I'll be visiting China in a few weeks and would like to find some car related things to do. I'll be visiting the ci***es of Yantai and Shanghai and will have weekends free to look around. Most of the other guys from work have not found any car related things to do. Anybody have any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Paracer

You can look at hot rods & hang out with ugly men in PA.

    I'd chase hot Chinese women.

I was in Shanghai 16 years ago. also Tsing Tao. we also looked at Yantai.
At that time, private auto ownership was pretty new. They were building roads and gas stations like crazy. I was absolutely amazed at the number of Bicycles, and some of the loads they carried. At that time, the only American type auto that they built was a Jeep Cherokee, under Chrysler license. I know there are some "hotrodders" there now, but I doubt if they are easy to find. Enjoy yourself, it is quite an experiance!

Fyi, I was there investigating the building of 50 meter yachts.

You could go down to the local steel mill and look for cool old car parts from the US.

Good luck trying to find old cars, but go on the maglev train. Not many other places you can do 240mph on the planet. (for just a few dollars.)

My nephew Mike, (who also does a little pinstriping) moved to Shanghai about 4 years ago, and is the head Chief in a couple American owned restaurants including a Texas BBQ place called the Boxing Cat Brewery. He told me a few weeks ago they lifted the noise ban in the city of Shanghai so now you can ride a Harley there. Guess there's a lot of rich guys riding Harleys now, but not much of a Hot Rod thing.....yet!

Teach them how to make quality parts or at least teach them how to read a micrometer while you are over there. :)

In April I was in Shanghai, Ningbo, and Yantai. Shanghai is a modern, cool city. Yantai, seemed a little "red" yet but was right on the sea, and is supposed to be a tourist destination. Take in the culture, i didn't see any hot rod stuff. Lots of scooters, Buicks, Beemers, and VW's.

Well, you could always visit the plants that make cranks and rods for Eagle, S.C.A.T and C.A.T along with the guys making the repop 32 grills and shells, I think the company is Vintique. Oh, while you are at it you can also visit the Franklin and Danbury Mint shops. There is one of the largest (tallest) radio towers just across the river in Shanghi, I think it is the worlds 3rd tallest tower. Take ride to the top and you can stand stationary and watch a 360 view of Shanghi. They have Chinese food that is the best in the world ( I wonder why) and also visit the Peace Hotel. I had a room there a number of years ago and the bathroom was bigger than my house here in the States. You can also hire a driver for a decent price and have him drive you the Great Wall, what a trip....................if you can get past the hundreds of vendors lining the way to the wall. I don't think you will find much in the way of Hot Rods there, but there is a lot to see........................IMHO

  18. Repel the EVIL Imperial Japanese Army......................or was that all over a few years ago?

Sounds like a great time to think about anything but hot rods.
I found that smiling and nodding are a common language that nobody really understands.
    Have a great trip.

As a H.A.M.Ber, I've been stuck here in China [ until Oct 13th ] I also believe "PanheadPete" is here in China.

I've been teaching them quality control in a big engineering firm [ it'll be easier to nail jello to the ceiling ]
The engineering firm where I'm at uses micrometers, but then everything was marked with chalk. I went and bought some scribers, the vender had them on the shelf for 5years and nobody knew what they were for.
Quality is totally foreign in their thinking, when you get here you'll understand. The whole place is falling apart around them. "footpaths, roads, furniture, just about everything"

Don't even mention the Japanese in China, most Chinese people hate the **** since WWII carpet bombing of Shanghai and Guangzhou [ stupid backward thinking from 4 generations ago ]

As you are an American, this statement could be true, all Aussie's and Kiwi's think your beer tastes like ****. The Chinese "Weasel Piss" is even worse.
I "got on the turps" with a few govt leaders over here, part of their culture is too skull back a drink with them all [ one at a time.]
There was six of them, and I drank them all under the table [ The previous beer I had before that was in 1991 , I don't normally drink ]

The Chinese people are reasonably friendly [ but there is a major language barriers ] they are in awe of foreigners , I'm 6'3" and 240lbs so I monster over them [ they're scared of me ]
Don't be frightened of the authorities either, but their beaurocracy will drive you insane.

You'll ****en die [ either from fear or laughter ] when you go for a taxi ride in China, it is total inconsiderate lawless chaos [ with surprisingly few accidents ]
You'll have a new found respect for asian drivers.

Be careful of the women too, they're all lovely ."I had a friend that got his wallet stolen from his back pocket ,while she was giving him a *******" [ talk about multi-tasking skills ]

Get a tour guide interpreter from the hotel and see the 'real' sights [ back alleys etc ] that is really worth it
Tour guides are expensive at USD $25 per day .

    Kerry

  28. I worked there 20 years ago. Not many cars. But in the agricultural areas surrounding the city (Min Hang, in particular) they had these funky tractors with boiling pots up front instead of radiators. Most were geared for work, but one enterprising fellow geared his for speed and slightly lowered it, too. It was fun to watch that thing buzz by.

Thanks for all the info. I PM'd deucegarage who knows about the local auto museums and private collections and he told me the Shanghai Auto Museum was not worth the effort...:(

Add me to the happily married category, however I have lost my wallet a few times... Just kidding honey!

I preferr KFC... they seem to be everywhere as well..

My hotel is near the station so I've got this on my list of things to do...

The Green Frog.. I'll have to look that up. ain't that the truth, a coworker unknowingly had a dog, beef and chicken soup last time he was there.

Good suggestion I'll have to look into this.

I'll have to p*** on this one.. I hear they eat alot of turtle as well...

I've been told I won't even know I'm in a communist country and everyone will be very friendly.. so I'm looking forward to it. Still WORK ****S!:D
