Removing powder coat finish

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 2many projects, Oct 2, 2010.

  1. I read today that Permatex Gasket Remover makes good for removing powder coating.
Has anyone else on the HAMB found that to be true?

I'm trying to strip 2 powder coated wheels. What a chore!
Tried sand blasting using 2 different medias, 1 cabinet and 2 different guns.
Ready to throw in the towel.

    Is traditional Aircraft stripper better?

Is Permatex Gasket Remover the answer????

  3. I had the same problem some years ago, powder coater told he has to burn off with a torch, it's a plastic base so it should melt off?

"Permatex Gasket Remover (item #80646). liberal coating, wait 15 minutes, and wipe off with your least favorite rag. maytake more than one try. Probably want to wear gloves and do it where ya get plenty of ventilation." This is what I posted on FTE 2 1/2 years ago. Hope that helps.... at least nobody came back and complained , lol.

  5. I had a bumper straightend once at a bumper shop and they had cut out the mounting brackets and then welded them back upside down. Unknown to me, I had the bumper powdercoated and then realized there was a problem. I used the giant torch at a gas tank shop to burn it off and it sucked. I have heard that Tal Strip takes it off easily.

If you do use heat just remember to watch out and don't heat the metal up too much or it will warp !

What are you trying to take it off of ?

Use a metal stripper like Aircraft Remover or Jasco which you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes. It'll peal off like paint.

I know that it's been a while, but would the aircraft stripper be too harsh for a set of carbs? (Dellorto)

There are 2 different types of paint stripper. One works, one dosen't touch powder coat. Read the ingredients. Unfortunatly I never remember what is the right one untill I read it.

If you use some of these recommended strippers to remove powder coat from aluminum, make sure that you neutralize any remaining stripper, because some of them will just continue eating on through the aluminum after the powder coating is gone.

I've used Mar Hyde with great success. Picked it up @ Advance Auto.

This may work but Easy Off works great on removing anodizing. Done this too and it worked great!

I've used the gasket remover and it worked great like previously said. 2-3 times at most and its completely stripped. I like to use a red scotch pad to help remove the coating and a clean one to clean the raw metal, along with a washing of soap and water.
